Purpose of this tag

It seems this tag has been superseded by Proposed_features/Public_Transport. Hence I would like to suggest to delete this page, or at least to add a more distinct warning not to use this tag any longer. --Marqqs (talk) 08:12, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Given the surprisingly high usage of the tag it would be inappropriate to delete it. I think there is a deprecated tag template, which although I don't really approve of it, will do what you want. SK53 (talk) 09:17, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
You can change the page's content to indicate it has been superseded by the other scheme, but as long as there are instances of this tag on the database, this page must not be deleted. --Jgpacker (talk) 14:33, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Multiple stop positions on the same tracks

Lastly this sentence was added: it should be either marked as two nodes with direction=forward and direction=backward respectfully, or as one node, at the halfway point of these two locations. — I think a railway=stop indicates a stop position, it would be wrong to average positions, rather there could be several positions (and the relations would use the appropriate stop of these). —Dieterdreist (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion! (I was the one who added this sentence.) I agree with you, but currently only one railway=stop node is mapped at most places. Which is not perfect, but I think it's better than nothing, especially for routing softwares. I've added a recommendation to map the two directions' stopping locations separately. It doesn't matter whether there is often just one railway stop currently, it could be that these stop positions are the only ones on this particular track, but what has always been documented is that there could be multiple of these stop positions, so there is not need to aggregate them, just add multiple instances. By the way, looking at the actual data, it doesn't seem as if "direction" is a common tagging combination for these: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/railway=stop#combinations --Dieterdreist (talk) 07:39, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

Unfortunately this is not the case currently at most places in Hungary, Austria, Switzerland and Germany, as I've checked—there is just one aggregated stop position not where the front of the train stops, but at the middle of the platform.

Yeah, it's not, but I think it should be, because most tracks are bidirectional. Thanks for making this clearer on the page! Gymate (talk) 08:26, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
