Alternative: service=firefighters

--BearT 21:28, 12 April 2011 (BST)

So, er... this is being used for "authorized vehicle only" turnarounds on motorways. Should the definition be changed? Additionally, should this tag imply access=emergency? --NE2 16:36, 10 August 2012 (BST)

I support renaming this tag to service=firefighters: I arrived to this page looking to confirm whether "service=emergency_access" is correct for motorway police-only turnarounds. This wiki seems to be aimed at short special access roads primarily used by firefighters. Tag name should be self explanatory, so let's rename the tag. To address comment from BearT: perhaps this should also mention that other emergency services may use it, but it is primarily aimed for firefighters. Also, may be there is a more concise name: fireway, firelane, fire. --HubMiner (talk) 17:44, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

I don't really think a specific name "service=firefighters" is proper here. To my understanding, this tag should be used for any emergency vehicles including but not limited to: police cars, EMS vehicles, firetrucks, military vehicles and so on... The current tagging way should not introduce any serious issues. When a fire truck is on scene, in most countries you will see police and medic coming as well.

I also apply this tag to emergency access road on highways for emergency U turns, IMO this tag needs a revised description for its wider usage but not just for firefighters. However, introducing new tags is not needed. -- CBRS (talk)

"exclusively used as an emergency access"

@Map per wiki: - what is the basis of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:service%3Demergency_access&diff=prev&oldid=2161473 ?

AFAIK many of them are used also as footways outside emergency Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 17:30, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

I think that way used as footways as well should be tagged as highway=footway as that is the primary use. (Combination with emergency=designated woud be good in this case) User:map per (talk) 19:22, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Maybe, but wide service roads reserved for emergency access - but without exclusive and sole use for emergency access - are tagged with service=emergency_access, what seems reasonable and suddenly invalidating it is not helpful Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:55, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
I think for service roads without exclusive and solo use for emergency access service=drivaway is more common. Do you have an example? But if you want you can delete the "exclusive" from the tegdescripton. User:map per (talk) 14:45, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
I was thinking about service roads usable solely by pedestrians and emergency vehicles. I will try to take a photo. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 15:45, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
@Map per wiki: - footway signed "fire road" - see https://i.imgur.com/I9IdmeH.jpg - footway that in my opinion is qualifying for this tag, excluded by "exclusively used" Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 01:48, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
I woud rather map that way a a footway as that is its main usage User:map per (talk) 12:15, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
highway=pedestrian? ---- Kovposch (talk) 11:47, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
I think it's important to avoid diluting this tag with any service road that's intended to be useful to emergency responders. The parking lot aisles in front of a police station shouldn't be service=emergency_access just because police cars park there. If the other usage is exceptional and not especially prominent, then it would be reasonable to use service=emergency_access with some overriding tags. But things like emergency crossovers in freeway medians and emergency shortcuts to gated communities are distinct enough from other kinds of service roads that access tags don't adequately describe the difference in purpose. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:11, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
If it's mainly not for vehicles (whether exclusively emergency vehicles or not), highway=service doesn't seem best. ---- Kovposch (talk) 11:47, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
