Confectionery

As most people might know, this kind of shop is often known as a  Confectionery. The tag shop=pastry is likely to be tagged correctly in most if not all cases, because the people that used this tag are likely to have read this wiki page. What I mean by this is that this tag is not intuitive.

I appreciate that the tag shop=pastry was created in order to differentiate a sweets/sugar confectionery from a baker confectionery. however people are more likely to tag something known as a confectionery with shop=confectionery (and this is not exclusive to english speakers, since at least in portuguese a confectionery is called a confeitaria). I think it would be better to use shop=candy or shop=sweets for the sweets/sugar confectionery, or simply use the same tag (shop=confectionery) for these two types. --Jgpacker (talk) 11:04, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

At least in Italy, and perhaps in France (wiktionary), shops that sell  Pastry are usually distinct from shops that sell  Candy: making them requires different skills and different equipment; likewise, people looking for the one (e.g. they want to buy an artisan-made cake) could be disappointed if they were routed to a place that sells the other (e.g. they find packaged bubble gum). I'm no English expert, so I really can't comment about the best name for the tags, although I do think that naming is a secondary problem considering that the need for differentiation is felt, as shown by the 243 usages of shop=pastry, and shifting the meaning of shop=confectionery, which already has 7,658 usages, away from the current one of "generic sweets shop", is not feasible. I think that it's not a problem if people from cultures that make no difference between the two kinds of shop keep tagging with shop=confectionery shops that also sells pastries; in fact, it's possibly even desired, as they won't need to be bothered with a difference that they don't feel. The thing is that merging both tags would not shift the meaning of the tag shop=confectionery as it is used at all (in fact, historically the wiki also documented this tag as selling pastries too, see shop=confectionery's page history). One of the reasons is because confectionery means both a sweets shop and a pastry shop, even in similar languages like portuguese (actually, it's confeitaria).

People would only be aware of shop=pastry that if they read it in the wiki, and I don't think most people read the wiki for basic tags like shop=*.

But I definitely think that (even in a portuguese-speaking country) they do deserve a differentiation. My suggested course of action is: To restore shop=confectionery's original definition and explain that whenever possible the tags shop=pastry or shop=sweets should be used instead, for a clearer meaning of what the place is .

I followed my own suggested course of action, restoring shop=confectionery historical definition (which already is the way it is used no matter how it's described in the wiki), and suggested shop=pastry and shop=sweets as more specific alternatives.
