Why not use healthcare=hospice or amenity=hospice?
The tag healthcare=hospice appears to be used over 3 times as often, and my understanding (as an American physician) is that a hospice is a healthcare facility, where dying patients are cared for by nurses and doctors. The tag amenity=hospice is about equally common. --Jeisenbe (talk) 13:29, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
- I am fine with both, would probably prefer "amenity" because healthcare is a kind of "specialist" tagging, while the generic tags are usually "amenity" (double tagging is suggested if you use healthcare tags, IIRR) --Dieterdreist (talk) 17:23, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
- A hospice is rather specialized, so it might be ok to use healthcare. A similar example is laboratories (where you can get your blood tested for example), which are more commonly tagged healthcare=laboratory rather than amenity=laboratory: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/compare/healthcare=laboratory/amenity=laboratory --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:42, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- For a laboratory, being a technical institution, I could also imagine "man_made" (although if it is open to the public, amenity (and or healthcare) seems better). IMHO hospice is kind of an edge case for healthcare. Unfortunately the healthcare tag definition does not define the term "healthcare" ("a facility that provides healthcare"), but according to wikipedia, "healthcare is the maintenance or improvement of health", which is neither true for a hospice, which is rather about assisting people dying in dignity. The emotional and spiritual aspects are usually more important than the medical ones. --Dieterdreist (talk) 08:52, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- If you read the next sentence of the wikipedia definition, you'll note that the key is what is done: " prevention, diagnosis, treatment, recovery, or cure of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments." Note that farmers, restaurants and supermarkets also help "maintain health" by preventing starvation, but they are not "healthcare providers" i.e. medical facilities. Palliative care, including hospice care, is certainly medical. Wikipedia again: Palliative care is an "interdisciplinary medical caregiving approach aimed at optimizing quality of life and mitigating suffering among people with serious, complex illness." --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:30, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- "Hospice care is a type of health care that focuses on the palliation of a terminally ill patient's pain and symptoms and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs at the end of life. Hospice care prioritizes comfort and quality of life by reducing pain and suffering." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospice --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:32, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

- agreed, no question, hospices provide medical care.—-Dieterdreist (talk) 23:33, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- Healthcare insinuates that it's a facility though. There are places who provide in home hospice care. The wiki article for healthcare says it "is used to map a facility that provides healthcare." So, tagging places that provide hospice care but aren't facilities would be wrong IMO. It's also worth noting that healthcare=hospice wasn't a part of the original healthcare proposal anymore then social_facility=hospice was in the social facility proposal. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- These places would get an office tag and might get an healthcare tag, but shouldn’t get an amenity tag (for sure not =hospice but likely neither =social_facility).—Dieterdreist (talk) 23:20, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
The tagging healthcare=hospice had been introduced by an iD preset without any discussion, and I have seen only tagging coming from iD. See also https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/issues/7217 - and without providing a wiki page for it; the latter had just been created yesterday by jeisenbe. Creating a wiki page retrospectively without analysis of what real-life features the tag has been used for is problematic.
I disagree that hospice should be in the healthcare key space. As some of you already observed, there are different facilities calling themselves "hospice":
- some provide private rooms with nursing beds, usually a small number only, thus are a specialised nursing home with further functions,
- some are a hub for specialised ambulatory nursing care, and
- some are outreach offices that primarily give support to the relatives.
This distinction is not country-specific, e.g. in Germany I have found all three forms. I never found them operating as a hospital with a permanently present doctor. As for the subtagging as social=facility=hospice instead of being directly in the amenity space, that has the same reason as for social=facility=nursing_home: 2-tier subtagging provides a better abstraction level. --Polarbear w (talk) 15:14, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- All of what you mentioned is still healthcare. While in general I strongly oppose to "author of editor invents own tagging, fails to consult it with community, deprecates existing tagging for the same objects, expects others to obey them" I am confused why "suitability of the healthcare key for an hospice is disputed" Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 23:21, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
