distance
range distance might be of interest, and for me also whether I am allowed to shoot with crossbow or bow and arrow. I also know that some ranges does not allow pistols, and some do not allow rifles, so type of weapon should also be tagged. --Skippern 18:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
tag for physical object
According to sport, the sport tag may only be used as an additional tag to some object, which has to be tagged as the object. So, what is a shooting range? Is it a recreation_ground? --Ipofanes 04:32, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
I think we should consider scrapping this entirely and redoing it. leisure=range sport=* pistol,rifle,archery for dedicated target shooting facilities and leisure=combat_sport_field sport=paintball,airsoft,laser_tag,boffer_combat,sca_heavy_combat for dedicated facilities for large scale combat sports. This is more consistent with other usage of the 'sport' tag, and eliminates the 'type' tag which eliminates many conflicts with other type tags (Such as multipolygons) --Hai-Etlik 23:17, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Direction
On other maps (at least in Sweden) shooting ranges are usually marked with an arrow that stretches over the range in the direction of the shooting. Something similar would be nice to do in OSM. --Erik Lundin 13:03, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

CLosed to public
I encountered a range that is only open to the local police department. With advice that I received in #osm , it's suggested to add the tag access=private for any ranges not open to the general public.
So how one should tag shooting range given that sport=shooting is not enough?

- That's a valid question given the state of this article, and your guess seems quite right to me. shooting=* lists leisure=pitch and sport=shooting as required tags, and the German article suggests that shooting ranges should be tagged with
- leisure=pitch
- sport=shooting
- shooting=range
- Why shooting=range not is a documented value is another question, given that it's the most common value for the tag. --Erik Lundin (talk) 19:38, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

- I brought up shooting=range for discussion at Talk:Key:shooting, and it seems that shooting=* was meant to distinguish between different types of shooting ranges (rifle/paint_ball/clay_pigeon/pistol). As I then understand it, it's the combination the combination leisure=pitch + sport=shooting that makes a shooting range. - leisure=pitch is meant for individual areas specically marked, often with white lines, on which to play a specific sport. To tag the whole site boundary of a range, including buildings, car parks, acces roads etc leisure=recreation_ground is more aprropriate. Pitch can ve used to map individual firing lanes if desired. --DaveF63 (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- I agree that leisure=pitch is not adequate for a complex site. I believe there is nothing wrong with leisure=range (also the civilian counterpart of military=range?). This could also be coupled with sport=archery for example, alternatively leisure=shooting_range seems fine to me. --sorcrosc (talk) 20:34, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
- The entire site, buildings, parking, safety zones embankments should be tagged landuse=recreation_ground, note landuse not leisure. Only the area actively used for the sport itself should be tagged leisure=pitch or leisure=range if you must. I would take the 'range' to be the active firing to target are, not the entire site. - At least in America a lot of shooting ranges are inside, you have to pay someone to get in, and its not clear where the "pitch area" is. Leisure=recreation_ground wouldn't work in those cases and neither would something like leisure=sports_centre. Shooting ranges aren't just for sport anyway. They also serve the purpose of safety training and a lot of people in America go to shooting ranges for that purpose. Not because they think its a sporty leisure activity. So personally, I think amenity=whatever would be a better tag for it. --Adamant1 (talk) 07:29, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
paintball?
Page currently mentions range=paintball. Is it really a subtype of sport=shooting? I expected a separate sport=paintball. Taginfo is not helpful as usage is really low. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:20, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
- The weapon used could be tag using shooting:weapon=paintball;rifle;pistol;air_gun. I agree though, paintball is completely different from sport=shooting and so should have sport=paintball, taginfo has this at >500 uses, more popular than the others and it has an OSMwiki page so that is what I'd go with. - sport=shooting is commonly understood to mean a controlled shooting range. Paintball involves guns, but the venue is distinct and it's used quite differently than a typical shooting range.
