railway:preserved=yes

What is the difference from usage=tourism to railway:preserved=yes. You should use both together? Or do we prefer one?--geozeisig (talk) 07:03, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Historically, railway=preserved was used for historic railways which have been "preserved" as "heritage railways", usually for tourism and recreation. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_railway for examples. It appears that "preserved railway" is a synonym for "heritage railway" in British English. The tag railway:preserved=yes was developed because not all preserved or heritage railways are standard mainline railways, some could instead be tagged railway=narrow_gauge or railway=miniature etc.
I imagine most railway=preserved features are also usage=tourism, but there are some modern, newer railways that were specifically built for tourists, but are not old enough to be considered "heritage railways". I suppose these can be tagged usage=tourism plus railway=funicular, railway=miniature, railway=monorail etc? --Jeisenbe (talk) 12:35, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your detailed explanation. --geozeisig (talk) 06:49, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Why not also service?

" A track is either tagged with usage=tourism or with service=*, not with both." - why yard of narrow gauge railway used for solely tourism cannot be tagged service=yard + usage=tourism? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:56, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

I agree that this is confusing. But as far as I can tell, the idea is that usage=* is for the main part of the railway line, not for the yard or service tracks or crossovers. This mostly makes sense for usage=main (the yard is not part of the main line) and usage=brance (the yard is not the branch line). It doesn't make as much sense with usage=military or usage=industrial but I believe in those cases it is allowed to add both tags - see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:service - "A track is either tagged with usage=* or with service=*! Execptions only exist for harbour, industrial, mine and military railway lines. Only those tracks may be tagged with both usage=industrial/military and service=* at the same OSM object." Looking at https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/usage=tourism#combinations it seems service=* is fairly often combined with usage=tourism, so I would say that usage=tourism should be considered similar to usage=industrial or usage=military, where service=* should be an allowed combination --Jeisenbe (talk) 07:17, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Not on Node?

What reasons are there that this tag can't be used on a node? Railway=station for instance? Please remember this tag can also be used outside of the railway world.
