Additional Steps needed to Build ?
Is the manual supposed to be complete? (On Ubuntu 12.04, using the ppa:mapnik/v2.1.0 PPA)
I needed the following steps in addition to build debian packages:
aptitude install build-essential devscripts debhelper libboost-program-options-dev libipc-sharelite-perl libjson-perl libgd-gd2-perl libwww-perl libmapnik-dev aptitude build-dep libmapnik cd /usr/local/src apt-get source libmapnik cd /usr/local/include ln -s /usr/local/src/mapnik-2.1.0/include/mapnik/ cd /usr/lib ln -s libmapnik.so.2.1 libmapnik.so ldconf
and then "make deb" in the tirex folder
Just to make sure I am not doing it completely wrong - if I am right I would be happy to include it into the article.

Ubuntu 14.04 Update
This was on a machine setup via Switch2OSM - Build from packages (i.e. with ppa:kakrueger/openstreetmap )
I believe all I needed beyond listed prerequisites is:
apt-get install g++ mapnik-dev
Then
svn co http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/utils/tirex cd tirex make deb sudo dpkg --install ../tirex-core <tabcomplete> sudo dpkg --install ../tirex-backend-mapnik <tabcomplete> sudo dpkg --install ../tirex-example-map <tabcomplete>
