Talk:Vi:Vietnam Mapping Guide
Chất lượng dịch / translation quality
@Arnalielsewhere: Hi, thanks for posting this translation. I assume this is part of HOT's inclusive localization effort? Has this translation been reviewed by a native Vietnamese speaker yet, preferably someone familiar with mapping? It looks like possibly a machine translation from American English to Vietnamese, which would be problematic because OSM documentation tends to use British English with plenty of idiosyncratic terminology. For example, "highway" is being translated consistently as đường cao tốc, which means a high-speed freeway but not a highway=* in the OSM sense; con đường or đường sá would be more appropriate. These inconsistencies will be confusing to Vietnamese contributors, because OSM software projects and other parts of this wiki have made many translation choices specific to OSM that a general-purpose machine translation tool would know little about.
I can try to fix some of the most glaring problems, but I don't want to duplicate any work that someone else (Nhi?) may already be doing. In general, it could save your team a lot of work to consult with the people who have translated OSM over the years, to align on terminology. This is not to say that iD or JOSM have perfect Vietnamese translations, but it's very important to be internally consistent and also engage with volunteers who want to help. Thank you for your efforts and for looking into this matter.

- Hi Minh. This is Tony, TuanIfan. Many thanks for your comments. What is wrriten on the Tagging guidelines is based on draft my friends and I had made earlier. Please feel free to edit the wiki page and add details into it when appropriate. Vutuan202 (talk) 13:15, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello Minh, thank you for your message and feedback. To respond and answer your points:
- Yes, this is part of the Localization effort in collaboration with 3 local communities (including Vietnam).
- We pitched the possibility of using machine translation to the community members/mappers in Vietnam, Tony & Huy, that we are in contact with but like you, they do not approve the idea of using machine translation because as we know, there are no machine translation (yet) that is very accurate and reliable for the Vietnamese language. So we tapped Grab Vietnam's (Map Operations Team) , in coordination with Nhi. The Grab Vietnam Team, as I know, are Vietnamese speakers, so they actually did the first pass of translation, and I think you are the first one who edited and reviewed the Vietnamese translation :) thank you very much! It looks like Tony and Huy have not reviewed and made comments to the wiki, as they shared they have been busy with their Academics recently.
- Thank you for sharing the translated OSM page, I will look deeper into this and will take note of this for the localization effort. We have also contacted the weeklyOSM team to collaborate and learn from their experiences.

@Arnalielsewhere: Thanks for your quick reply! I'm glad to hear that you've been coordinating with Vietnamese speakers and totally agree about manual translation being a better starting point than machine translation in this case. As you can see on the Translation page, software projects have taken a variety of approaches to sourcing and managing translations, not all of them very successful, so this effort could also give software developers ideas for future improvements.
