North Island

Auckland

Yeah, I'm working on Auckland streets, mainly in the Mt. Eden/Kingsland/Balmoral/Mt. Roskill, Mangere/Otahuhu, Birkenhead/Glenfield/Takapuna/Devonport and Orakei areas. Aside from one other user, who seems to be contributing huge amounts of unlabelled or imprecise data - some doubling up - there has been little change on the city. Is anyone else contributing? I am drawing in streets, using Potlatch and the excellent aerial photographs, in the Howick area towards Bucklands Beach. This is in preparation for a visit in a couple of months' time when I hope to add details of names etc (unless someone else cares to take that on!). i don't know. do your ways intersect (his/hers don't) at common nodes? do you draw single roads made up of lots of short pieces? are your ways drawn inaccurately, usually completely missing the road/path they represent? the ones i've seen are mainly on the north shore and round mt eden/balmoral/three kings it's taking me longer when he/she has doen this preliminary 'mapping' than when it's completely virgin territory. I spent a year in NZ a little while a go, now I'm back in Germany, and just got to know the OSM Project, had a little look on Auckland, especially North Shore, added some street/place names I remembered from my time living there. But are Beach Rd and East Coast Bays Rd really to be tagged "primary" as they are? I'd rather consider them beeing secondary to tertiary. What would you say? --Alagos 16:21, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Wellington

I'm adding in streets, rail, and coast from the sat pics of Wellington and the Hutt Valley. I've named all the streets I can remember (haven't lived there for a couple of years), but could use some local help. I've done a few GPS traces around through the new bypass and corrected the end point of state highway 1 (it was changed to end at the airport some years back). I'm mainly working on the Porirua area (where I have lived for nearly twenty years) but I'll also cover other bits of Wellington and the Hutt Valley as I visit them. South Island

I've added a series of tracks from GPS from a holiday trip in August. Around Nelson/Motueka (obviously S Island) then from Wellington cross country to Auckland, via centre and East Coast (some GPS signals were dropped or lost). To compliment this I have been digitising from Landsat the areas of coastline around the areas I went, for context as much as anything else. Plan to finish the top end and the West Coast when I get time. If someone go run lowzoom.pl we could see the complete picture (sorry I can't). Would love to see mapnik showing better (get rid of flooding!). Happy to be contacted via email link -- Steve8

I'm busy digitising features from the Yahoo images in North Canterbury. Anyone want to join in and work on an adjacent area, or name the roads for me (I'm doing this from the other side of the world so visiting is not an option!!). - kmf

I just did a two week drive all the way around the South Island, with my GPSMap 60CSx on 1-second resolution. All of these are uploaded now, and I'm slowly following the track around neatening the existing roads and adding any missing ones (Timaru - Oamaru was missing!). in a bid to become more organised/coordinated, would it be beneficial to lay out a list of items most urgently needing attention? i realise most of us are limited in the areas we can cover, making this somewhat idealistic, but it could be a starting point for anyone new and asking for direction? a possible list, in order of importance motorways

MAF data

several items have been added to OSM, with attribution MAF

where did this data come from? do their usage restrictions (if any) permit this? has it been attributed correctly? there do not appear to be any mentions of it on either of the OSM mailing lists, so i am doubtful Myfanwy 21:23, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Proposal: State Highway 1-9 as highway=trunk

The Tag:highway=trunk says that it is used for "Important roads that aren't motorways. Typically maintained by central, not local government." which seems to me to fit the description of State Highway 1 through 6 (where they aren't motorways). There doesn't seem to be a real consensus on this: in many places they are highway=primary ("Administrative classification in the UK, generally linking larger towns."), but I suspect that is just because the name 'seems right' rather than that people have read through the tag descriptions in detail. I started converting some stuff to highway=trunk but then I thought maybe it would be better to get some consensus first... The main reason I think it is a good idea is because when we get our highway= tagging right the map as a whole should look more or less right at various zoom levels and I think there are some zoom levels where the overall map is a bit dodgy. If there is a consensus then maybe we can say this on the project page. Karora 08:57, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Further to this, I think that we should say SH1-9 highway=trunk (where it isn't highway=motorway), and SH10-99 as highway=primary. Other roads which Transit NZ lists as part of the "Principal Road Network" should be highway=secondary. http://transit.govt.nz/road/map1.jsp seems to have some low resolution maps which make it clear which roads fall into which categories. There doesn't seem to be a SH9, but otherwise this seems a sensible plan to me (if http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_State_Highway_network is correct, it also matches how the maintenance responsibilities used to be). Yes, suffixed versions are definitely still state highways of the same level of importance. There is also 6A between Frankton & Queenstown which is obviously a very important side-branch off SH6. Karora 04:42, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

I would also like to propose normalising the names (ref) of state highways e.g. "SH 1" rather than "1" or "SH1". Currently the North Island looks to consist mainly of "SH 1" version and the South Island mostly of the "1" version. - HadleyRich

Transit's own nomenclature is without the space "SH1" etc. Eg [[1]]. Google search for SH1 vs "SH 1" also wins --EliotB 06:41, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

My preference here would be to use "1" because that's what you seen on the ground. Road signs show it as a red shield with "1" not SH1 or SH 1. Even Transit don't seen that consistent, [State Highways] lists the highways just by number but then in the the example of "97" says it connects SH6 to SH 94 so uses all 3 methods. I realise this may look uglier on the current mapnik/osmrender maps. The ideal longer term solution would be to have a tag something like the network tag of a Relation:route so you could tag the relation or the ways with something like "network=New_Zealand_State_Highway ref=1" which would also make it easy for renderers to show different badging schemes for different road networks. --rcr 09:25, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm not fussed which ever way it goes, I can't remember why I originally said "SH 1" over the other versions. I think consistency is the main thing and your argument for matching the shields on the road side has merit. HadleyRich 04:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm happy to see "1" used without "SH", which is redundant information that can be added by some presentation layer. In particular I think because a shield with a "1" on it is all that we see on the road signs. Karora 04:35, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

while we're on the subject of highway numberings - does anyone have any suggestions how to label lesser roads? i see dominion rd in akl, is labelled with a '4' on road signs. how do we fill in the ref tag for this? i've currently just put a '4' in, but that looks wrong. any ideas? certainly - to use the example of dom road again, it's made up of lots of segments; some one-way, some delineated at roundabouts. of course, that only moves the original problem - how do we tag the route relation? with '4'? or something else? regional highway? myfanwy 00:57, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Following on from the section above, propose some usage of different highway types to be added the table in Key:highway.

• Administrative vs physical classification.
• Also rural vs urban usage.
• Examples

See also Christchurch council classification. Chch city plan lists about 400 roads as Major arterial, Minor arterial, or Collector. Also specifies minimum road widths for the different classifications etc.

Highway classification - possibility

This is following on from the tagging of State Highways.

I've pulled out some pre-NZTA maps showing what Transit New Zealand has classified each State Highway as: national, regional and sub-regional. Here is my proposal:

Motorway

Self-explanatory - any motorway. Only true motorways should be tagged (i.e. ones with "Motorway Begins/Ends" signs) - not roads just named motorway.

Trunk

All national State Highways, which are:

1N (SH14 - Wgtn Airport), 1S, 2 (SH2A - SH2B, SH50A - SH3, SH58 - SH1), 2B, 3, 3A, 5, 6 (SH1 - SH60), 15A, 16 (SH18 to Port end), 18, 20, 20A, 20B, 28 (SH1 - SH5), 29, 30 (SH5 - SH33), 33, 50 (SH2B - SH50A), 50A, 73, 74, 74A, 88

Primary

All other state highways

Secondary

Urban routes in Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth; major routes in other areas

Highway Classification As an employee of NZTA I am interested in agreeing standards for state highway classification in New Zealand. I posted a question on OSM wiki http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/6282/how-to-separate-out-nz-state-highways-using-type-attribute-in-roads-layer. Usefulness of calibrating Bing Imagery alignment

editorial: User:Hamish thinks this task is rather a fool's errand and a waste of energy -- a moving target with a short fuse. Every 6 months or so the various images update, at which point we have to start over. We simply don't have the population density to keep up. See the discussion on the NZOGPS mailing list mid-2010. n.b. we've observed properly surveyed positions to be at least 60m out from the Bing imagery, especially in places of varying terrain (e.g. Deep Water Basin, Milford Sound is horrendously out).

Do not adjust GPS traced roads and LINZ data to match Bing Imagery!!!

We need the use of the Linz topo map tiles as a traceable background if at all possible, being a map they are created from orthorectified imagery that has none of these alignment problems. Enzedrail 02:16, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Railways

I am mapping railway lines, the kind of detail that I am interested in will have to be tagged something like the following: Stations / yards: open, closed, abandoned, removed etc Bridges: If I am mapping an abandoned line I want to map a bridge that has been removed. There are also a few instances in New Zealand of bridges that are shared by road and rail. Tunnels: Mapping tunnels that are abandoned or have been removed. Infrastructure: the kind of infrastructure that I might want to map would include waypoints such as mileposts, buildings such as signal cabins or control towers. Crossings: is there a symbol for where two lines cross over each other (a diamond in railway jargon). Enzedrail 01:23, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Forest or Wood

I see that a lot of natural forest has been tagged as landuse:forest. My understanding is that this tag is only used for managed forests and plantations used for forestry. The natural:wood tag is then used for non-forestry wooded areas. Is there a reason why we have used landuse:forest and not natural:wood here in New Zealand? --JAYSONHOOGY 03:48, 24 April 2012 (BST)

Hi, I know this reply is coming 9 years later... But if anyone else is interested, vegetation data was imported from LINZ, which has two different classifications for what we would call 'bush' or 'forest':

The "native_poly" layer was imported as natural=wood

The "exotic_poly" layer was imported as landuse=forest

I wasn't involved in this decision, but I suspect it was since OSM has no tagging scheme for whether vegetation is native or exotic.

Should a geothermal field be mapped or just the activity?

I asked a question about how to tag natural geothermal activity. The suggestion was to use natural=geothermal_field but this and other similar tags do not render in maps and I think this sort of tagging also goes against the underlying principle of mapping real and currently visible features. Should there be better guidelines for how to map geothermal activity? I would welcome any thoughts. - Huttite (talk) 23:44, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Why is the WikiProject New Zealand page non-standard?

Why is the WikiProject New Zealand page non-standard? If one compares New Zealand to Australia and other countries there is a fair bit of information on the main project page, using standard templates that is not shown on the New Zealand project page. This makes the New Zealand project seem disorganised. Or is it defunct? In some respects I would prefer a separate New Zealand country page that was independent of the WikiProject.

• The country page could explain, at a high level, how the country is to be mapped and what the consensus is about which tags to use where. This page should highlight what parts of the map are considered complete and should not be touched and what parts require development.
• The project page could then be confined to matters that relate to the project, such as what work is going on, mapping priorities, to do lists, social and community activities, ideas and any discussion needed to develop consensus.

At present the page has not been touched since 2012, so I am wondering if the project is even active anymore. - Huttite (talk) 00:35, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Removing "WikiProject" prefix

Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I would like to change the name of the wiki pages related to the New Zealand mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.

The name of the pages related to the New Zealand mapping project would be "New Zealand" (name of place) instead of "Wikiproject New Zealand", as recommended by the wiki conventions. It is a change that I have already made in United States, Canada, Spain, and all Spanish-speaking countries on this Wiki, consulting with their communities beforehand. Hard work but good results.

I could make the necessary changes, no problem, and also add the Country template to the New Zealand project page, although this change is optional.

Moving addresses?

Hi, this is totally fine. As part of the 2021 LINZ Address Import/Update, addresses in OSM are regularly compared with the data from LINZ. Reagrdless of whether they're on a building or a node. Adding some kind of authority tag to Tūpuna Maunga (Auckland)

Many of Auckland's volcanoes and mountains are governed by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority which was established in 2014. To make this clearer on osm, I thought about adding a tag that could indicate this. I looked at the 'authority' tag, but I found via Tag info that this is not currently being used in NZ. Is there a more appropriate tag or should I go ahead and use this tag? Pgov (talk) 06:32, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Pedestrian crossings at intersections

I have noticed that pedestrian crossings at intersections are usually not mapped (in Auckland at least). I have seen that the project doesn't have clear consensus on how to map these, with some adding separate highway=crossing + crossing=traffic_lights nodes and others adding crossing=traffic_signals to existing highway=traffic_signals nodes.
