Deletion backlog

I was having a look at the "short pages" list, and several of them only consist of a "This page has been labelled for deletion." template. That's understandable in cases where the template was inserted only recently, but some have been around for up to 4 months What can we do to speed this up? --Tordanik 18:55, 2 April 2012 (BST)

Yes I did notice that the short pages task is hampered a little by the fact that a lot of the Special:ShortPages actually only contain the delete label, and this is something only sysops can tackle.
There's another discussion about the procedure for deleting elsewhere. Actually I've just found it and moved it to Template talk:Delete (where the delete procedure is documented) Let's discuss that there.

WIKI page lists

Orphaned Pages

Shouldn't there be not only a sub-chapter for dead ends under "Wiki page lists" but also one for the other side, the lonely or orphaned pages? IMHO it is even more important to have one or more links to a page (in order to find it, eighter from another page or from a category page) than from a page (status pages often are not intended to show links). Proposal for the sub-chapter (similar to the dead ends sub-chapter):

Orphaned pages lists pages which are not linked from or transcluded into other pages in OpenStreetMap Wiki. This normally suggests that the page needs some attention. Wiki pages should be well linked (Wiki guidelines#Linking) and every page should have some sentences at the top introducing the topic in broad terms. If the orphaned page is a subpage of another page (mainpagename/pagename) it should normally be easy to set a link on the mainpage. Orphaned pages may be completely missing an introduction, so you need to figure out what the page is about in order to write a sentence or two and find out the pages which should be linked with the orphaned page. Unfortunately there's no prioritisation of this task. It's just a big list to work through.

--Rennhenn 16:01, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I didn't write a section about Orphaned pages. Certainly it's another list we can use to find problems, but I didn't present that as a 'wiki maintenance task', because I think the solution may not always be so obvious (This page is aiming to be a list of really easy brainless wiki fixup tasks) . To solve a page being an orphan you might go to some larger 'portal' page and add a link... on the other hand by doing that you might be cluttering the portal page. Not so obvious. -- Harry Wood 22:31, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Dead Ends/Orphaned Pages

Looking through A-C in orphaned pages I often found pages which were categorized. So they can easily be found and used. IMHO they are not orphaned and so should not be shown in that list. A_Wand'ring_Mapper for example is on both lists, in the one for orphaned pages as well as in that for dead end pages. It is categorized as OpenStreetMap_songs and so everybody looking for OpenStreetMap songs should be able to find it. As the respective WIKI page lists show those categorized pages as well there might be added a short sentence regarding that on the maintenance/clean-up instructions.

Status regarding Fix slippymap elements pointing to osmarender

I tried to find a more or less systematical way to do that job and used the approach of working down the different place-categories (re-arranging those place-categories to have a better structure there is another project, see Categories added by Template:Place). I started documentation of the categories for places I already checked and and developped the following table (sometimes users also use maps in their user pages - these shall be excluded from the following table). Everybody is invited to help and fill in this table. --Rennhenn (talk) 10:38, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Impressive stuff. I saw you found a bunch of them.
But I've just figured out a smarter way of finding them using the wiki dump. As a result I've been able to fix all of the old layer=osmarender references! so I guess we can cross this task off the list. None left to fix!
There's other maintenance to do on all these place pages of course
-- Harry Wood (talk) 02:45, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
That's great - maybe I'll come up to you to learn more about wiki dump at a later point in time if I don't get it on my own. (The next 3 weeks I don't have my head clear for new things) --Rennhenn (talk) 08:06, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
There are still pages with layer="osmarender" in quotes, for instance Hammersmith and Fulham. --Andrew (talk) 10:12, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah yes. I had the feeling I might be speaking too soon :-)
Found a bunch more: http://harrywood.dev.openstreetmap.org/wikicheck/wikidump/osmrenderoccurs-titles.txt (113 of them)
I'm doing a crude grep process to find those, which is flawed, so that list will be somewhat wrong, but good enough as a guide to a manual fixup process, and I can re-run it after we think we've fixed most of it (and after a fresh wiki dump)
-- Harry Wood (talk) 12:31, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
By the way, the fix I've been doing in wiki edits, is to remove the layer parameter, so it defaults to mapnik, rather than specifying mapnik directly. I think that's better because in all these cases the original intention was to show an overview map for which osmarender used to be better. -- Harry Wood (talk) 12:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Keys and Tags not described in English

Some times I stumble across Key: and Tag: pages not described in English. I have hitherto just added the template {{Translate from German}} or whatever language I figure the page in. My question is, would it be desirable for the {{KeyDescription}} and {{ValueDescription}} templates to identify such key and tag pages where no English namespace page exists, or where English namespace page have the parameter lang= set to another language than English? This would be a good way to hilite such pages, and a translation effort could be put into place to bring all such pages at least to English which in most cases are the necessary basis for translation into other languages. --Skippern (talk) 21:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I think that it could be useful if the templates added the affected pages to a maintenance category (such as Category:Translate from German) automatically. --Tordanik 15:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
But how should one determen what is the main language when several non-english translations exists? Sort namespaces according to userbase/popularity? i.e. if French, German and Esperanto pages exists, should it be added to Translate from <any language which have page> or just German or French? Retorical question --Skippern (talk) 18:18, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
The easiest way to implement this would be to have the {{Languages}} template populate a category of pages that are not available in English where it puts in a red link below the line. You could also add categories for other languages, for instance pages that are unavailable in German. If the categories are sorted by language it is easy to find the original; when there is more than one they would all be listed. --Andrew (talk) 19:07, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I am modifying {{Languages/Interface}} to report a list of pages that include the {{Languages}} template but have no version in English in [[::Category:Pages unavailable in English]]. --Andrew (talk) 17:14, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Any page with English in the red link section is reported; this occasionally gives surprising results. --Andrew (talk) 17:51, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
