Description of circular in this template does not fit to Tag:junction=circular. A circular does not imply that all incoming traffic has always the right of way! But a roundabout imply that the inner traffic has always the right of way! -> circular is the opposite of this: "having not always"! --Langläufer (talk) 16:03, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- I don't fully understand what you mean specifically. Anyway, IIRC junction=circular in the OSM-meaning was specifically created to solve the situation that some (not all) incoming traffic has priority, e.g. Strausberger Platz in Berlin . --23:54, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
conflicting descriptions roundabout vs. circular
I see these general cases of roundabouts and circulars:
- The circular traffic has the complete right of way (at every node an at every time) -> clearly roundabout
- The incoming traffic has always the right of way (at every node an at every time) -> clearly circular
- The traffic is ruled by traffic signs, marks and/or lights: -> conflicting descriptions exist
- The circular traffic has the complete right of way (if traffic light is of) (-> often tagged as roundabout, but may not match with law (German STVO))
- The incoming traffic has the complete right of way (if traffic light is of) (-> circular)
- some but not all of the incoming ways have the right of way (-> often tagged as circular, does not fit to the description (1) as given in this template)
- Special cases e.g. with crossing trains (-> tagged like "ignore the train")
Case 1 and 2 are clear. For the cases 3.x I found conflicting descriptions at different places here in the wiki:
Roundabout:
- Introduction of Tag:junction=roundabout: The tag junction=roundabout is used only on road intersections where traffic on the roundabout has right of way. That is, the roundabout itself should be free from all intersection controls including traffic signals, stop signs or stop markings, give-way (or yield) signs or give-way markings. (this is case 1)
- Template:Circular and widened road features: There can be traffic light, as long as the circular road has right-of-way when the lights are off. (case 3.1 in conflicht with first)
- Tag:junction=roundabout#Special_cases Signal controlled: Even when all junctions are signal-controlled, it is suggested that junction=roundabout be retained. (case 3.1 -> but does not fit to introduction and law (e.g. German STVO))
Circular:
- Introduction of Tag:junction=circular: The tag junction=circular is used only on road intersections where traffic on the junction does not have complete right of way. (this is everything not case 1)
- Template:Circular and widened road features: A circular junction ..., however the circular traffic has not always the right-of-way (same)
- Template:Circular and widened road features: Circular...: However the circular traffic must yield for each entering road (this is case 2, but only a special case of circular)
- Tag:junction=roundabout#Special_cases Not a roundabout: It is not a roundabout if one of the roads entering the circle has the right-of-way. (fits to 1, but in conflict with description of circular in template)
