A transport mode is a way of transporting people or goods.
In the OSM database they most commonly show up to tag legal access restrictions specific to a certain transport mode.
When used as a key they denote the general legal access, see Key:access#Transport mode restrictions. For example bicycle=no means that bicycles are not allowed.
Transport modes can also be used as key suffixes to narrow down restriction tags, for example:
Sometimes however a transport mode suffix does not narrow down the tag but carries a different meaning, for example:
In conjunction with the *:lanes=* suffix transport modes can also be used as:
- key prefixes with e.g. psv:lanes=*
- key infixes with e.g. turn:bus:lanes=*
