United States/New Mexico/Department of Transportation/Design Manual
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Design Manual is a primer on how traffic engineering and urban design is used to build safe, efficacious, and environmentally conscious highway infrastructure around New Mexico. It is implemented in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration's national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and defines additional signage guidelines as outlined on the MUTCD/New Mexico page.
It is divided into sections, most of which have something to say of relevance to OSMappers:
- The Design Process
- Intro
- Project Management
- Planning
- Concepting and Review
- Submittal
- Hearings
- Documentation
- Special
- Valuation
- CAD
- Surveys
- Right-of-Way

The Design Process
This is somewhere mappers can look to get a head start on surveying upcoming changes or developments near them.
Documentation
Much paperwork related to an in-world feature can be requested, OMA/IPRAd, or FOIAd.
CAD
Perhaps somewhere to inquire about imports.
Surveys
Not to be confused with the related OSM jargon.
Right-of-Way
Since rights must be sought for construction, the resultant paper trail evidences the existence of a feature.
Materials Investigation
See key:material.
Bridges
See bridges, retaining walls, and tag:barrier=guard rail.
Drainage
See tag:waterway=drain.
Work Zones
WIP
Geometrics
The measurement/standardisation of the road and surrounding infrastructure and how the terrain was altered to build it.
Traffic Signaling
See tag:highway=traffic signals.
At-Grade Crossings
See rail.
Pedestrian Infrastructure
See sidewalks.
