I live in Freiburg i. Br., Germany but I am originally from Budapest, Hungary, which I regularly visit. My edits are concentrated around these two cities and anywhere that I visit.
Contributions
Most frequently I improve data about shops, amenities, tourist sights so that people don't have to search for their websites on the internet. In this vein, my favourite (most frequently used) keys are
opening_hours
opening_hours:kitchen
source:opening_hours
opening_hours:url
check_date:opening_hours
check_date
lunch
contact:website
contact:facebook
.
An important reference work for me is Key:opening_hours and I heavily use the evaluation tool to verify the formatting of opening hours that I enter.
A tricky situation occurs when e.g. a bar is open past midnight but on public holidays (PH
), it opens later than usual (e.g. according to Sunday opening hours). The public holiday must be an additional rule which is separated by a comma instead of a semicolon from previous days not to overwrite the hours of opening in the early morning hours past midnight. However, it must do something to enforce later opening than would be customary on that day of week: you must include a rule for PH
with off
(closed) for the time when it is still closed. See these examples.
I used to maintain a page on my website about the model shops of Budapest for over a decade. In September 2018, I decided to integrate that data into OpenStreetMap and abandon my own page.
Benefits
One thing that fascinates me about OpenStreetMap is how you can query the database to get very specific information out of it. Sure, you have to learn how to use the Overpass API from the query language guide. But once you've understood it, it is like working with a scalpel.
