Outdoor Mapping Guide for OpenStreetMap
A simple guide for outdoor enthusiasts on contributing to OpenStreetMap (OSM) with minimal efforts.
Create an OpenStreetMap Account
To start contributing, you'll need an OpenStreetMap account.
Explore OpenStreetMap Data
The OpenStreetMap website displays the latest map data.
- Visit OpenStreetMap
- Use the search bar to find a familiar area
- Navigate the map using the controls on the right side
Add Map Notes
Notice issues on the map? Add Notes to help experienced mappers correct them.
- Go to OpenStreetMap
- Browse to an area you know well
- When you spot an issue, right-click and select "Add a note here"
- Fill in the form and submit
Examples of data quality issues:
- A missing road or trail
- A road marked as a trail or vice versa
- A missing river crossing, viewpoint, or coffee shop
Upload Your GPS Traces
Uploading GPS traces helps ensure data accuracy and validates aerial imagery.
- Go to OpenStreetMap GPS Traces
- Click on “Upload a Trace”
- Fill in the form and click "Upload"
Document Your Trips with Text and Photos
Trip reports with photos and text can help mappers understand trail conditions.
- Create a free account at Komoot
- Import your trip GPX file as an activity
- Add photos and a description
- Share it publicly
