Based in West London I stumbled across this project while looking for maps for my Garmin Vista HCx. Having downloaded some that others had made available I'm now making my own, see below.

I'm particularly interested in using the maps for cycling, but also walking, skiing and narrowboating.

I maintain a simple web site for booking time on the narrowboat of which I am part owner. This links to the OSM map to show the whereabouts of the boat.

Activities

I started by adding a whole chunk of missing streets near my home, an area known to estate agents as Olde Hanwell. Since then I've filled in all the streets and pedestrian cut-throughs in an area roughly bounded by Boston Manor Road, Uxbridge Road and the Picadilly Line. Now I'm having to cast my net wider to find gaps, mostly on my daily cycle commute into town.

In Feb 2008 I managed to map most of the Isola 2000, France ski resort. Completed Feb 2009.

Since then I've been wandering the streets and alleys around Liverpool Street in my lunchtimes to fill in some details around there. I've found the GPS traces are almost useless here as there are so many tall buildings, especially when it comes to marking the little pedestrian cut-throughs.

A recent bit of tracking was on the Rochdale canal, I've waypointed all the locks and bridges between Sowerby Bridge and Littleborough, there's about 50 of each.

Added some roads to and on Mersea island, which was completely blank before.

Started mapping the village of Lyng where my parents-in-law live.

Mapped most of Broadhaven and Little Haven in Pembrokeshire while on holiday there.

Making Garmin Maps

I got a GB extract of the planet file from here: http://download.geofabrik.de/osm/europe/

Then, because the UK is too big to make a Garmin .IMG map in one go I snipped it, like: "c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\bin\java.exe" -Xmx1000m -jar splitter-r105\splitter.jar great_britain.osm.bz2
