I use the following values:
- path=shortcut for segments which are bypassing the "normal" way; a shortcut. It is usually a "desire paths" but not every desire paths is a shortcut (see "Notes on tagging"):
- Definition: A (usually) short segment. The segments is parallel to another way or connects to ways which are connected by other means as well.
- Example: https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/125732330. Other example: Ways skipping switchbacks in the mountains.
- Rationale: Allow routers to ignore such segments and to route via the "normal" way.
- Notes on tagging: You can always add informal=yes, but path=shortcut implies informal=yes (but informal=yes does not imply path=shortcut).
