Classification and species

Thank you Marek for compiling this exhaustive proposal. What is probably not necessary is part of the suggested classification. You suggest:

  • Order -- is implicit in species
  • Family -- is implicit in species
  • Genus -- is implicit in species
  • Section -- is implicit in species
  • Species -- is necessary for detailed tagging
  • Subspecies -- might be interesting for specialists
  • Forma -- might be interesting for specialists but then there could also be "subforma" and "varietas"

Instead of using the various name tags I was precedently using "species:de" and similar for the common names. Please do not suggest to map common generic species descriptions as name:de or similar, because this key is already reserved for individually named trees (usually special historic trees, monuments or trees which are dedicated memorials for a person or event, or similar). -- Dieterdreist 10:16, 16 May 2011 (BST)

Why would you write localized names for trees? The taxon/species defines local names. It's the role of the editor to present the name in Latin and local language. At rendering time, you may want to add some "on hover tool tip" displaying the name of the tree under the cursor in various language. You don't need, you don't even want to give all the local names to the trees: there's your (brilliant) lookup table for that.
Likewise you state that a road is let say highway=residential, nobody would write highway:de=Straße an und in Wohngebieten (oder? ;-)) --Nospam2005 (talk) 18:23, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
Really like the idea of 3D trees - good luck with the implementation of this. +1 for using species= to implicitly give classification. It has been discussed elsewhere the utility of using taxon=* - this is worth considering - but species= appears more popular at the moment. Classification of species is an imposed structure which changes e.g. there are sub-families, hybrids, polyploidy, scientific name changes and cryptic species - and eventually evolution. Using taxon= captures what the surveyor has access to at the time of survey e.g. genus, species, sub-species etc and does not need complex hierarchy of tags. Hawkeyes 14:59, 21 Jan 2012

Estimated age

--Tordanik 17:07, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
start_date=* is the right tag for this, age changes every year. Janko (talk) 21:06, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
