OpenStreetMap Community of Ivory Coast
In Cote d'Ivoire in particular, the control and management of geographic information (GI) is a key economic, political and social challenge.
Although the geographical component is found in almost all areas of human activity, and particularly in planning and development projects, access to a digital resource of up-to-date, high-quality and open geographical data is still difficult.
OpenStreetMap Cote d'Ivoire (OSMCI) is a free digital mapping community founded on August 3, 2013 as a result of a training course on mapping with OpenStreetMap in the town of Attecoubé led by Mr. Sebastien YAPO and Potey Desmanois.
After completing the OpenstreetMap training course in Attecoubé, four engineering students in computer science, among them Emmanuel Bama, Konan Guy Maurel, Korsaga Jean Michel and Keglo Kossi Stéphane, decided to launch Marcory OSM TEAM, whose objective was to map their town of residence, Marcory. For this purpose, a mapping party was organized in Marcory in order to restitute the training received in Attecoubé, to map and train a group of contributors to the OpenStreetMap project. The mapping party raised a lot of interest among the participants, the immediate impact is the increase of training and mapping parties in the communes of Abidjan and cities in the interior of Cote D'ivoire. Marcory OSM Team moves to OpenStreetMap Cote D'Ivoire.
Since 2013 the OSMCI community has been active in Cote d'Ivoire, in Africa and beyond the African continent.

Contribute
Many places in Ivory Coast are not mapped yet or don’t have many details. And in many places the tracing could be improved. Get involved and help us to make OSM in Ivory Coast better!
Residential roads are missing in many areas around the main cities, they're visible in Bing imagery or Mapbox Satellite. Bouake especially, and Yamoussoukro too. Abidjan is mostly good but missing some on outskirts.
GPS track logs
Because there is no good aerial imagery available for the country (outside the big towns), we need GPS track logs that can be recorded with a mobile phone. Because currently there are few GPS track logs, this is a good way to contribute. You can collect GPS data with a smartphone, for example using OSMtracker.

Tips
Do not use CAPITALS.
The key:highway type helps indicate the importance of the highway within the road network as a whole, and not its current state of repair or its surface. For the latter, you can use key:surface or key:smoothness. See also Highway Tag Africa. Order of roads (importance):
1. highway=motorway (only the motorway Abidjan-Yamousoukro)
2. highway=trunk (not used in Ivory Coast)
3. highway=primary
4. highway=secondary
5. highway=tertiary
6. Within residential areas: highway=residential // Outside the residential areas (countryside/overland): highway=unclassified
7. highway=service (very small roads without through traffic)
A “primary” road stays “primary” also while it passes through a town or a village.
Please note: The value track of the key highway is used to represent roads for agricultural use typically passing through fields/farmland, forest tracks etc. It is not used for small roads within towns or villages, even if their state of repair is bad.
In Ivory Coast and especially in Abidjan, people normally orient themselves with the crossroad names and roundabout names. As many roads have still no name, an address is normally something like “I live near to the XXX crossroad.” Therefore, crossroad names and roundabout names are important. They are tagged with junction=yes and “name=XXX”. The tag “name” includes the word “carrefour” if appropriate; that means for example “Carrefour Duncan” (and not only “Duncan”) and « Carrefour de la vie » (and not only « de la vie »). If it is a simple crossroad, the junction node of the two way is tagged.
Sources
- Bing aerial imagery
- “MapBox Satellite” has sometimes better images than Bing and is also available in the JOSM settings dialog: tms[17]:http://{switch:a,b,c}.tiles.mapbox.com/v3/openstreetmap.map-4wvf9l0l/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
- Landsat8 aerial imagery (west of Ivory Coast): tms[19]:http://imagery.openstreetmap.fr/tms/1.0.0/guinee_c10_l8_pxs432/{zoom}/{x}/{y}
- GEOnet_Names_Server (GNS) can be accessed as a WMS layer to find names of “unknown” town and villages. If you work in JOSM, you can download this file (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ivorycoastgeonetnames/files/GEOnet%20Names%20C_te%20d_Ivoire%20_%20Espaces%20peupl_s.xml.osm.bz2/download) which is an .osm.bz2 file which makes it quite comfortable to work with this data in JOSM. Attention: The data is of very poor quality. Even the data with status “Approved” is often shifted some kilometers and very often completly wrong!
- Map Library has basic administrative boundaries of Ivory Coast, but is completly outdated. In OSM there are yet boundaries of districts and regions who are based on Map Mibrary, but up to date (2014).
- Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection has various maps. For Ivory Coast see [1].
