The Atlanta Citywide Mapathon is a past event which took place on the weekend of 17th 18th 19th October 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia

During this three day mapping event, local businesses, community groups and OSM members joined together to launch a citywide initiative to help make the map of Atlanta one of the best in the US. This fun, family friendly event was held at venues across Atlanta and people interested in learning more about OSM and how open maps can benefit their community and spur economic development were encouraged to attend. We were also encouraging people to get out and map their neighborhoods, in addition to working as a group to add points of interest to public spaces and local attractions.

The event was covered on a FOX News Atlanta TV report. Sadly the link to that no longer works on the fox news website. (anyone took a copy of that video somehow?)

The mapping party is over, but the mapping still goes on! For more information about OpenStreetMap in Atlanta, please visit the Atlanta, Georgia page.

Citywide Mapathon

We will be mapping the downtown Atlanta area including parks, university campuses and historic sites. Volunteers will be on hand to help new mappers learn how to use a GPS or Walking-Papers and have helpful tips for beginners. Come for the whole day or just stop by for an hour to learn the basics of community mapping and add a few points of interest to the map.

One of the easiest ways to participate during the Mapathon is to browse through OSM and investigate the map of your neighborhood for naming inaccuracies, missing roads and attractions. With just a few clicks of a mouse it is possible for anyone to make these types of minor edits. We are also encouraging neighborhood associations, church groups and clubs to get out into their local communities and record the names and locations of pubic amenities, attractions and local businesses. Multiple data drop-off sites will be set up around Atlanta for people who are unable to edit the map but would like to contribute data from their neighborhood or people who need assistance adding their traces and points of interest to the map.
