The concept of Auroville - an ideal township devoted to an experiment in human unity - came to the Mother as early as the 1930s. In the mid 1960s the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry proposed to Her that such a township should be started. She gave her blessings. The concept was then put before the Govt. of India, who gave their backing and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 1966 UNESCO passed a unanimous resolution commending it as a project of importance to the future of humanity, thereby giving their full encouragement.

Some pionier mappers uses place=hamlet for Auroville communities but its not correct! Testing that no places are tagged as place=hamlet in Auroville
Auroville Roads
Auroville Streets paved with concrete stones. Like in Front of Library. !! "surface"="concret" is definitly NOT correct here !!

Roads like the one between Certitude and Solarkitchen can be tagged as unpaved, but this ist all between mud-earth-gravel-compacted. user:hoxel proposes following mapping for this roads:

Roads inside of Aurovillien Communitys are regulated as "living_street"s. Everyone have to be care about Children and waking People:

Auroville water ponds
hoxel would propose to distinguish two types of water bodies:
1.) Water catchment ponds.
- (eg:water catchment in Sadhana)
landuse=basin (see:Tag:landuse=basin) basin=infiltration (see:Key:basin)
2.) Local Watertanks in villages arround Auroville and ponds in AV witch are not build for water catchment
- (eg:Watertank in Kuilapalayam)
- (eg:round water pond in New Creation)
