Botswana National Malaria Programme (NMP) Mapping
Background
Malaria is still endemic in several areas in Botswana. The Ministry of Health and Wellness, through the National Malaria Programme (NMP), conducts activities such as Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and mosquito nets distribution to fight the disease. To facilitate these activities, the ministry is conducting field mapping together with HOT in six malaria endemic areas in Botswana: Chobe, Bobirwa, Boteti, Tutume, Okavango, and Ngami. More information: Link to initial blog
Who
The mapping is organised collaboratively between the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and members of the local OSM Botswana Community. The main coordinator and contact person at HOT is David Luswata (OSM User: Lusdavo – david.luswata@hotosm.org).
When
Initial remote mapping for NMP activities happened between November 2016 and February 2017. This was followed by another round of remote mapping/validation in March 2018. Field mapping in selected areas will happen between April and June 2018.
What
Mapping activities involve collection of selected attributes about buildings, communities and roads. The main focus is on surveying buildings, and determining their exact use, as malaria interventions focus on residential buildings. Information on building construction and materials is used to deduce which buildings are suitable for spraying.
The following data model is used for field mapping:

Tasking Manager Projects and Instructions
The HOT Tasking Manager projects used for coordination are available for review here: https://tasks.hotosm.org/contribute?difficulty=ALL&text=Botswana-NMP
Changeset comment identification
Remote mapping changesets that are part of this project should have the following hashtags at minimum: #EliminateMalaria #Botswana #MissingMaps
Field survey data should have the following changeset comment: #EliminateMalaria #Botswana-NMP #OSMBotswana and the source specified as NMP HOT Field survey
Contacts
All mappers should be alert to comments on changesets and messages through OSM and depending on language options may reply directly or forward any messages to the mapping organizer for reply. All contacts via changeset comments or direct messages via OSM will also be forwarded by the mappers to the mapping coordinator listed above.
If you have any difficulty getting a response to any mapping issue or other question (no reply in 24 hours Monday - Friday) you can always email info@hotosm.org which is guaranteed to get a response, usually within 24 hours/7 days a week.
