This is now a "sub-wiki" to both California/Railroads, and California/Railroads/Active from which it was split off due to length.

Common Carrier Lines in Southern California, expressed as route=railway relations, with active, regular rail traffic, whether freight or industrial. For Active Northern California rail, see California/Railroads/Active/Northern.

Due to the sheer size of the amount of Active rail and the space taken up by their data and tables, this wiki is geographically split between Northern and Southern California: Common Carrier Lines Southern and Common Carrier Lines Northern. Small enough to not split is Private Rail (all of California). The north/south split occurs in San Luis Obispo at the northern terminus of UP's Santa Barbara Subdivision and the southern terminus of UP's Coast Subdivision as well as at "Tehachapi Loop" south of Bakersfield (approximately MP 351), splitting BNSF Mojave Subdivision, so it is found in both BNSF Northern and BNSF Southern sections/tables.

Common Carrier Lines (Mainline, Branch, Industrial and Short), Southern

Active Lines tables are "largely complete" and "mostly correct." There may still exist some minor usage=industrial lines or spurs not yet included here. California High Speed Rail (CAHSR), under construction

This will become a "common carrier passenger line" (only, no freight) when it opens for revenue service in the 2030s. S of Bakersfield, tagged usage=main, highspeed=yes, state=proposed, eventually landuse=construction polygons will become active in this corridor. The route=railway S of Bakersfield, name=Desert Subdivision, has unknown funding as of 2023-Q1; so this is a "mere stub" in OSM. CAHSR's inclusion at the very top of this wiki's "CCL, Mainline" section is deliberate. While this will be a purely passenger rail line, its transformative effects on the entirety of rail in California cannot be overstated; the project's "mainline" status deserves at least this brief mention here. Current "proposed" tags should shift to "construction" only after funding, out for bid and bid awards finalize (don't change tags yet) and then "ground-breaking" (e.g. photo-op with shovels into dirt) begins (OK, then change tags to construction).

Union Pacific Railroad, Los Angeles Division (UP)

In California, UP operates an expansive network of over 3364 miles (5414 km) of track (including trackage rights), over 48% of California's railroads. In 2015, with a workforce of about 5,000 employees, UP’s California operations handled over 3 million carloads. UP operates in California as two divisions, Roseville Division (Northern California) and Los Angeles Division (Southern California).

Mainline

Note there is a UP Mojave Subdivision in this (UP's Los Angeles Division Mainline) section (Bakersfield - Mojave - Colton) and a different BNSF Mojave Subdivision in BNSF's Southern California Mainline section (Mojave - Barstow).

BNSF Railway, Southern California (BNSF)

In California, BNSF operates over 2015 miles (3242 km) of track (29% of statewide total) – about 16% of the statewide total are owned by BNSF and about 13% of the statewide total through trackage rights, with a workforce of almost 3,500 employees. See also SCRRA/Metrolink (SCAX) where BNSF has significant trackage rights. BNSF is North America’s largest intermodal carrier, handling over 4.9 million trailers and containers in 2015 in the United States (compared to UP’s 3.9 million). In addition to its own routes, BNSF holds trackage rights over UP at Tehachapi Pass between Bakersfield and Mojave, as well as in California's Central Valley. California serves as the western anchor to BNSF’s Transcontinental Corridor route Southern Transcon Southern Transcon, linking Los Angeles with Chicago. On this corridor, consumer products, which include everything from food and automobile products to agricultural and industrial products, represent the majority of BNSF’s transported commodities: in California alone, BNSF moves about 3.9 million carloads per year.

Short Lines (Branch, Industrial or Freight, occasionally Mainline), Southern

Active "short lines" (exclusively Class III railroads) expressed as route=railway relations. Short Lines largely have tags of usage=branch or usage=industrial on underlying infrastructure. On occasion, usage=main is found on Short Line passenger routes, for example, NCTD supports COASTER passenger=suburban route=trains. Some segments of Short Line infrastructure are tagged railway=light_rail to reflect their primary usage, while the same or closely-parallel tracks are also but not simultaneously used (temporally shared at night) as usage=branch, for example, San Diego MTS's SDAE Blue and Orange by SDIY and North County Transit District's SPRINTER by PSRR. California is home to 19 active short line railroads and 7 switching and terminal railroads operating on 1296 route miles (2085 km).

There are hundreds of km of railways tagged usage=military which might be collected into route=railway relations and added to this or a sibling section. Some military rail segments are tagged tiger:name_base=US Government Railroad (or similar), though these can and do vary on military reservations (e.g. "Old Rail Garrison Railroad," "U S Navy RR R W"). This Overpass Turbo search might be useful. In Southern California, there are military rail areas at Vandenberg AFB, Edwards AFB, MCLB Barstow, USAF Plant 42 (Palmdale), NAWC China Lake, NCBC Ventura County, NWS Seal Beach and MCBC Pendleton and possibly others.

All of that now said, Short Lines tables are "believed complete" and "mostly correct." If you find a railroad, subdivision, line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, whether to the map or to this wiki, please do so!

Genesee & Wyoming, Southern California (ARZC, SDIY, VCRR)

A "railroad holding company" with three railroads in Southern California, one of which has operator rights only on trackage, one of which own trackage or have a mixed owner/operator status. (For example, SDIY is an operator only on SDAE's lines). Total mileage (in California): 657 miles, just over half of the state's short-line rail.

Arizona and California Railroad (ARZC)

Total mileage: 297 miles, 91 miles of which are in California.

Total mileage on SDIY: ≤2 miles, or 43 miles including trackage rights on SDAE's Orange and Blue lines. SDIY interchanges with BJRR (San Ysidro Yard) and BNSF (San Diego Yard at Cesar E. Chavez Parkway). See SDAE section.

Ventura County Railroad (VCRR)

Total mileage: 13. VCRR interchanges with UP at Oxnard.

Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority (ATAX)

Owns the trackage of the Alameda Corridor, a freight bypass built in 2002 (around the much lengthier Harbor Subdivision, now being partially repurposed for passenger service) to carry trains rather directly from the UP and BNSF mainlines to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Total mileage: 31, ~52 km.

Baja California Railroad (BJRR)

A class III railroad operating via trackage rights on the 1.8 km of SDAE's San Ysidro Line (distinct from, connecting to SDAE's Blue Line). BJRR interchanges at the San Ysidro Yard as one of two freight operators here with the other (SDIY), where SDIY also has trackage rights. BJRR also has trackage rights on Desert, planning a rehabilitation of that line. See SDAE section.

Total mileage in USA: about 1 (1.8 km). Total mileage in Mexico: 44 (72 km).

Total mileage in USA is expected to increase during Desert Line rehabilitation. In June 2016, BJRR secured a 99-year lease with San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (SDAE's owner of the Desert Line) to first rehabilitate, then operate industrial/freight on an additional 112.75 km (70.06 miles) of track on Desert between Campo, California and Plaster City, California. This US segment of line, with 57 bridges and 17 tunnels, is planned to be rehabilitated in three phases between "Division" (at the US-Mexico border) and Plaster City, California: Phase 1 Campo to Jacumba Hot Springs; Phase 2 Dos Cabezas (near Ocotillo Wells) to Plaster City; Phase 3 from Jacumba Hot Springs to Dos Cabezas. After rehabilitation efforts are completed, an additional BJRR interchange is possible with UP in Plaster City. It is not known what effect this might have on PIR, which has trackage rights on UP's El Centro Subdivision between Plaster City and Seeley; please clarify.

There may be some name blurring (in the map, in this wiki) between "NCTD" and "SDNX."

Owned by Anacostia (a "railroad holding company"), this neutral switching railroad operates on 18 route miles (29 km) and 59 track miles (95 km) as well as facilities owned by both the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach. OSM data as of 2019 include hundreds of elements from TIGER import which have been substantially reviewed and improved by user:clay_c. OSM data ("minor infrastructure and naming") may be incomplete w.r.t. PHL rail which is not its "main track." Additional improvements (to identification of and naming) of "other than PHL's Main Track," Marine Terminals, Stations, Place and Track Names, Switch Designations, Mileposts, CTC and Interlocking Limits are appreciated! Pacific Imperial Railroad (PIR)

In 2013, freight operations on SDAE's San Ysidro and Desert Lines were conducted by Pacific Imperial Railroad (PIR), interchanging with Baja California Railroad (BJRR). As of 2018, San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIY), owned by Genesee and Wyoming, conducts freight operations on SDAE's Blue, Orange and San Ysidro Lines, interchanging at San Ysidro Yard with BJRR and San Diego Yard with BNSF. As of October 2017, PIR filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and sold its lease to operate freight for 99 years on Desert Line to BJRR. While BJRR now operates freight, MTS remains owner of Desert (as SDAE) and BJRR must pay SDAE (MTS) US$1 million a year for operator rights. BJRR has a three-phase plan to rehabilitate Desert, although as of February 2018 no rehabilitation work had begun. With this lease sale to BJRR, it appears PIR's only rail assets are operator rights on UP's El Centro Subdivision from Plaster City to Seeley; please clarify.

Since September 2020, owned AND operated by BNSF (was leased and operated by Watco Companies, a Kansas-based "railroad holding company"). Total mileage: 62 (100 km), the majority of which are trackage rights on NCTD and SCAX. In addition to light freight/industrial usages on Miramar (which PSRR is believed to own) and Escondido Subdivision (owned by NCTD), PSRR has trackage rights on NCTD San Diego Subdivision north from Miramar to Oceanside (~40-45 track miles) and north of there on OCTA's Orange Subdivision (SCAX/Metrolink) to Stuart Mesa Yard and as far north as San Onofre / Orange County Line, performing switching services on these lines, interchanging with other BNSF freight consists at Stuart Mesa Yard.

San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway (SDAE), San Diego and Arizona Railway (SDAX)

Complexities in San Diego partly arise from difficult physical trackage on SDAE's Desert branch, tumultuous corporate ownership and financing histories and a number of different railroads providing widely different services in the area. An SDAE / SDAX and San Diego area summary: San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) owns SDAE, primarily providing passenger=urban services as SDTI, while Genesee & Wyoming has temporal (nighttime) industrial/freight trackage operator rights on SDAE's Orange, the short segment of San Ysidro and portions of Blue as SDIY. SDIY interchanges with BJRR at San Ysidro Yard and with BNSF at San Diego Yard (Cesar E. Chavez Parkway). BNSF owns BNSF San Diego Subdivision, connected by trackage rights at West F Street (near San Diego Santa Fe Depot) to Oceanside on NCTD and Fullerton on SCAX. BJRR also has trackage rights on Desert from Division to Plaster City, this segment is planned to be rehabilitated. SDAX (original parent railroad of SDAE) offers museum/tourism passenger trains around Campo on SDAE's Desert infrastructure. (PSRR is a switching railroad in the area, but not on SDAE / SDAX trackage, now with BNSF as owner/operator). It is somewhat complicated around here!

Southern California Regional Rail Authority / Metrolink (SCAX)

The SCRRA is a joint powers authority governed by five county-level member agencies: Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) and Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC). Rail supporting Metrolink passenger service is either owned by one of the member agencies (as in the table below, please correct/update), used via "operator rights" while remaining owned by a railroad company like UP or BNSF, and/or may be "in shared service" with another (non-member) transportation agency such as LOSSAN, one of the joint powers authorities funded by Caltrans' Division of Rail as Amtrak California. (It is complicated around here). Total owned rail = 533 miles (859 km).

Note there is a SCRRA Valley Subdivision in this (SCRRA) section (Los Angeles - Palmdale, owned by SCRRA/Metrolink-SCAX, while UP has trackage rights) and a different UP Valley Subdivision (Roseville - Chico - Dunsmuir) in UP's Northern California Mainline section.

About the (status) colors in the Name column

Green means that the route's TIGER data in OSM are fully reviewed. This strongly implies that all other relation attributes are correct, but this isn't always strictly true; see Notes column.

Yellow means "only partially reviewed" ; additional volunteer work is needed to enter or correct additional railway route data into OSM. Yellow may also mean a route has a volunteer entering data, yet route ambiguities persist about what is actually correct.

Red means that "something" (often very little) is known about the route, so it is useful to put a row in the table about it as a placeholder, but it likely may be too early to create a route relation: route data are unknown, incomplete or route attributes are significantly missing.
