• Depending on each state or Union territory, a subdistrict may be known as a tehsil, taluk, subdivision, circle, mandal, or commune panchayat.
• The subdistricts are cities, towns, or groups of villages, headed by a municipal authority know as a Municipal Corporation (M.Corp.), City Municipal Council (C.M.C.), Town Municipal Council (T.M.C.), Town Panchayat (T.P.), or Gram Panchayat (G.P.).
• In a few densily populated cities, subdistricts may also be large suburbs whose former City Municipal Councils are grouped (along with other surrounding town or village councils) in a larger local authority also known as a Municipal Corporation (whose merging as a single municipal authority is still legally debated).
• Subdistricts may also be themselves subdivided into multiple wards (for electoral, fiscal, or development planning purposes), which may be separated villages, hamlets, or islands of the same rural or maritime subdistrict.
