Construction Projects Ireland
Background
This initiative is intended to complement the efforts to map all buildings in Ireland. At any given time, some number of construction projects will be active. As mappers, we frequently map the extent of construction sites and progress on construction, either based on current information (from surveys) or lagging information (aerial imagery). By recording and maintaining what we know about active construction projects, we make it possible for mappers to understand when the map data may be stale, when it may be worth checking for progress that can be mapped.
What to record
To the extent possible, the following data related to construction projects should be entered:
Data item | Explanation | OSM tag where applicable |
---|---|---|
Project Name | The name of the development under construction | name=<name> |
Project Description | Long-form description of what is being built, please enter any local context that may help readers to identify the location | description=<content> |
Contractor Name | The name of the company undertaking the construction work (often posted on a sign on-site) | operator=<name> |
Contractor URL | URL to the contractor (ideally to a page related to the project, but top-level is OK too) | website=<url> (where a project-specific page is available) |
Start Date | The date when construction began (if unknown, date of first mapping is OK) | start_date=<date> on landuse=construction object. Once complete, and the landuse tag is changed, this will have to change to reflect actual completion date. |
End Date | The best estimate for when construction should be complete. We will use this to trigger reviews of what is mapped V updated reality. | opening_date=<YYYY-MM-DD> |
Last Update Date | The date on which a mapper most recently checked that OSM reflects latest available info (survey or imagery). Should not be changed just because a partial update was made, e.g. adding or adjusting a single building. | check_date=<YYYY-MM-DD> |
Suggested Review Date | The date by which it would be wise for a mapper to check for updates to progress. This should be chosen based on the expected progress velocity. | next_check_date=<YYYY-MM-DD> |
OSM Object URL | URL to way or relation enclosing this construction project (typically landuse=construction) | Can be formed based on the object ID |
Interested mappers | Usernames (ideally as links to user profile) of mappers who have declared themselves interested in helping to map this project. Mappers should enter themselves on this list, appearing here indicates a willingness to collaborate with the others. | Should probably not be tagged in OSM, but could be extracted from change history, either of the construction area itself or perhaps of any object contained within it. |
The suggested tagging attempts to reuse where possible tagging already in use in the project. Please offer feedback where an opportunity to reuse has been missed.
Where to record
To the extent that this is possible without polluting the data set, this data should be maintained inside the OSM data set. Summaries and reports of active projects can then be extracted using, e.g., Overpass queries, and could be offered in reader-friendly form on Wiki or Web pages.
