(It's by talking that things goes better)

Dedicated user accounts are currently (Jan 2013) required for Imports for the following reasons:

  • Current redaction tools work with an account as base, therefore separate account names are required for imports.
(add links to the tools? -jeffmeyer)
I don't find it, but it is the tool that was part of the CC-BY-SA to ODBL migration. sletuffe 23:14, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
  • Changeset tags should still be used for imports, but current tools cannot revert or redact data solely on changeset tags, which makes the DWG's job more difficult when imports go wrong.
  • In JOSM it is easier to detect an import if the previous account who touched an object is labeled blabla_import to guess that was an import, and to encourage the user to know more about it.
(Can you add more info here? I'm not sure why a user would be encouraged to know more about the object just because some of its attributes had been imported. -jeffmeyer)
I don't understand it myself, I wrote what I read from F. Ramm's post here and try to clearly write down what are the reasons to prefere a 2nd account requirement instead of another solution (like changeset tags) sletuffe 23:14, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

NOTE: The DWG feels the requirement for a separate import account could be replaced by mandatory adding tags to describe your changesets in the future, but the tools need to improve before that will be possible.

Do we have any tickets filed against the tools to request these features? If so, they would be good to list here. If not, we should organize some ticket filing as part of the import review process & maybe even recruit some help to develop against the tickets, no? - jeffmeyer

I added one to JOSM to help at automatically setting changesets tags : [1] that would help reduce the cases where tags are forgotten (or where contributor forget to change their user account since we could remove that requirement) sletuffe 23:05, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
