FI/Humanitarian OSM Mapathon
Join us in Helsinki for Humanitarian OSM Mapathon @ Finnish Red Cross! No mapping experience required!
What?
If you like maps and the idea of helping others, then this event is for you! Idea is to get to know a bit of Finnish Red Cross and do a bit remote mapping. There will be a short introductory session including experiences of Finnish Red Cross people on using maps in the field work, introducing the mapathon goals and the mapping tools at the beginning of the event. After introductions we will do mapping remotely for an area somewhere around the world. All the mapping will be done indoors, using a computer. Experienced users will be helping new mappers all throughout the Mapathon.

Location: Finnish Red Cross premises, Tehtaankatu 1a, 00140, Helsinki (we will be indoors all the time!)

10:00 - 10:20 Opening the event and greetings from the earlier mapping events / Vuokko Heikinheimo & Eduardo Gonzalez
10:20 - 10:40 Experiences of using maps in international humanitarian work by Finnish Red Cross representative / Eero Sario
10:40 - 11:00 Presenting the mapping task of the day and practical guidance to the OpenStreetMap editing / Erno Mäkinen & Juuso Korhonen
11:00 - 13:00 Mapping and exchanging of ideas. There are people available to help beginner OpenStreetMap mappers.
About 13:00 Coffee break
13:00 - 15:00 Mapping continues by those who are willing. The office space is reserved until 15:00.
Participating
Register to the event event is full (max. 20 participants)
Bring your own laptop and mouse, digitizing is hard if you use the laptop touchpad.

Preparing for the event and some learning resources
If you don't have an OSM account yet, you may register an account at www.openstreetmap.org/user/new before hand.
We will go through the basics in the event, but if you have time before the event, you can learn about OSM and remote editing here:
- Basic OSM skills - Minimum time up to you, maximum time about 2 hours to complete
- Remote editing - Takes about 1 hour including the linked Tasking Manager section but excluding "Remote Mapping - Starting to map" subsection JOSM parts
