FI/SPR HOTOSM Mapathon September 2016
Join us in Helsinki for Humanitarian OSM Mapathon @ Finnish Red Cross! No previous mapping experience required!
What?
Please, see also the Facebook event page!
If you like maps and the idea of helping others, then this event is for you! The idea is to get to know a bit about Finnish Red Cross and do remote mapping. There will be a short introductory session and introducing the mapathon goals and the mapping tools at the beginning of the event. After introductions we will map an area (see below for more details). All the mapping will be done indoors using a computer. Experienced users will be helping new mappers all throughout the Mapathon.
When?
Wednesday 21st of September, 2016 at 17-20 o'clock.
Where?
Location: Finnish Red Cross premises, Tehtaankatu 1a, 00140, Helsinki (we will be indoors all the time!)
Tentative Program
- Welcome speech, 5 minutes by Eero Sario
- Presenting the mapping task and the country, 10 minutes
- Introduction to the HOT task manager and to the iD editor, 15 minutes
- Mapping
You are most welcome to help in organizing, please see the discussion at HOT-OSM Finland Facebook-group.
Participating
Registration here. About 50 participants will fit to the premises.
Bring your own laptop and mouse, digitizing is hard if you use the laptop touchpad.
We also plan to have possibility to participate remotely via Google Hangouts. Link will be posted at the Facebook-event page just or during the actual event.
Area to be mapped and focus
The task will be picked from the HOT Tasking Manager website. The task is #1673 - Missing Maps: Binga, Zimbabwe.
Preparing for the event and some learning resources
If you don't have an OSM account yet, create one at www.openstreetmap.org/user/new before the event.
No preliminary skill in OpenStreetMap are needed as we will go through the basics in the event but feel free to familiarize yourself already in advance with basic (and a bit more advanced) OSM editing skills:
- The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team website
- Presentation Humanitarian OSM Activities in Finland by Vuokko Heikinheimo (in Finnish)
- Basic OSM skills - Minimum time up to you, maximum time about 2 hours to complete
- Remote editing - Takes about 1 hour including the linked Tasking Manager section but excluding "Remote Mapping - Starting to map" subsection JOSM parts
