Fenland/Wisbech Mapping Party 2009-11

Where

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, UK. here

Wisbech is a small-ish market town of about 20,000 people in the north-east corner of Cambridgeshire's Fenland district. This suggests that four people should be able to survey it completely in 5 hours and upload the results in another 5.

However, in the immediate hinterland we have another 7,000+ people in the parishes of Leverington (and Gorefield) to the north, Elm to the south (incl. Friday Bridge) and Wisbech St Mary to the west. The suburb of Walsoken is actually in Norfolk, but no harm in that.

There is almost nothing of these currently mapped.

NCN 1 and NCN 63 go through Wisbech.

When

Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November 2009 - either or both days welcome. I (David.earl) plan to stay overnight.

Public transport options are limited. There is an X1 bus from Peterborough and X9 from Cambridge and Ely (not Sunday). However, I plan to cycle to and from Downham Market station, 13 miles, just over an hour say. So three meeting places for Saturday:

• Cambridge station, for the 08:33 train
• Downham Market station (west side platform, not the main station building!) 09:05
• Wisbech: meet at the SR Internet Cafe, 22 Blackfriars Road (just south of Horse Fair, roughly here by 10:30 am.

How

Usual things: a GPS receiver and something for note taking. A bike or shoe leather. We'll happily show beginners what to do. If you have a laptop computer, please bring it so we can also do some of the editing collectively.

What

I've divided the town into seven sections along the river and main roads, plus the four neighbouring villages, based on an estimate of density. Wilsoken is a natural extension of E. While the central area C is quite dense in the centre itself, there seems to be a large factory and school north of Weasenham Lane which I hope makes it less to cover than might at first seem to be the case.
