OpenStreetMap isn't just innovative because it's free - it's also innovative in that new features can get onto the map much more quickly than with traditional webmapping companies.
See here for sources of information about new developments that we should map.
Among the features mapped first by OpenStreetMap are:
2006
- Oakham bypass mapped by 80n and Blackadder before opening
- E4 motorway east of Uppsala mapped by kjelle on opening day
2007
- A429 Barford Bypass mapped by Blackadder one week after opening
- New estates in Whiteley, Hampshire mapped (as far as possible) by Dean Earley while still under construction.
- Northfield relief Road mapped by Blackadder during construction and opened May/June 2007
- New A8 route in Port Glasgow mapped by bruce89 a fair bit after the road was built, but still before anyone else.
- Various changes to the A814 in Glasgow have been mapped by bruce89 when it changes.
- Minworth Relief Road, Birmingham mapped by Blackadder one week after opening in Nov 2007
- A51 Rugeley Bypass mapped by TomH on 2nd December 2007, just over two months after it opened on 28th September 2007
- Sheffield Inner Relief Road, mapped in November 2007, weeks after it opened
2008
- Wilfred Owen Close in Shrewsbury mapped by Higgy. There was a blank name sign when it was surveyed. Two weeks later there was an article about the name and unveiling the sign, not far from where the famous war poet was known to have lived. Later the same week the name was recorded in OSM. Another first.
2009
- Dienvidu tilts - Southern bridge in Rīga, Latvia was mapped on the day of opening.
2011
- Circuit of The Americas raceway near Austin, Texas, mapped by Homeslice60148. This was completed using a combination of Bing aerial imagery, construction permits, and site plans filed with the State of Texas. The Circuit will be host to the F1 and MotoGP United States Grand Prix from 2012 through 2022.
