Governments in China generally lack interests on hiking trails, with the notable exception of both Hong Kong SAR and Shenzhen City.
Brief History
Two of the Governors of British Hong Kong, Murray MacLehose and David Wilson were hikers. MacLehose established the country park system in his term.
The first hiking trail in Shenzhen was Meilin Mountain Trail Phase I, opened in November 2019. Since then, the network of hiking trails grows rapidly. In Hong Kong, new hiking trails are inaugurated with new country parks.
