Import/Catalogue/Karawanken/Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark
Karawanken/Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark is an import of the transboundary geopark boundary dataset which is of type polygon covering 14 municipalities in Austria and Slovenia. The import is currently at the planning stage and the wiki page is work in progress.
Contents
1 Goals
- The primary goal of this import is to upload the merged administrative boundaries of 9 Austrian and 5 Slovenian municipalities that constitute the Karawanken-Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark. This will create a single geopark boundary in OSM, reflecting the actual park area.
- This import will improve the quality of boundary data for the geopark and ensure the geopark's representation in OSM.
2 Schedule
- Data Preparation: 17.09.2024 - 30.09.2024
- Import Start Date: 01.10.2024
- Completion Date: 04.10.2024
- Review and Validation:04.10.2024 - 15.12.2024
3 Import Data
3.1 Background
The import data consists of the administrative boundaries of 14 municipalities (9 from Austria, 5 from Slovenia) that form the boundaries of Karawanken/Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark. The boundaries were originally downloaded from OSM, merged, and will now be re-uploaded as a unified geopark boundary.
3.2 OSM Data Files
- The import will be done using shapefiles (SHP) that have been merged into a single polygon representing the geopark's boundary.
- Data format: Shapefile (SHP) with attributes relevant to OSM tagging standards.
3.3 Import Type
- The import will be a manual or semi-automated process using JOSM and QGIS to ensure data quality.
- It will involve validating the new boundaries against existing OSM data.
4 Data Preparation
4.1 Data Reduction & Simplification
- Tools used: JOSM
4.2 Tagging Plans
The polygon will be tagged as the boundary of the [Geopark Name] using the following tags:
boundary=protected_area
protect_class=6
name:de=Karawanken UNESCO Global Geopark
name:sl=Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark
name:en=Karawanken/Karavanke UNESCO Global Geopark
protection_title= UNESCO Global Geopark

email=
4.3 Changeset Tags
Each changeset will include the following tags to ensure transparency and traceability:
source=OSM type=import description=Import of [Geopark Name] boundary, merged from Austrian and Slovenian municipal borders.
4.4 Data Transformation
- The shapefile has been projected to OSM-compatible coordinates (EPSG:4326 - WGS84).
- Any irrelevant attributes from the source data have been removed.
4.5 Data Transformation Results
The final output is a single polygon that accurately represents the merged boundaries of the geopark, ready for upload into OSM.
5 Data Merge Workflow
5.1 Team Approach
- The import will be conducted by a small team of experienced OSM mappers, including [List of team members], responsible for various aspects like data validation, conflation, and upload.
- Community feedback will be sought through OSM's communication channels like the Imports mailing list and local OSM groups in Austria and Slovenia.
5.2 References
The following datasets and sources have been referenced:
- OSM administrative boundaries of [Municipality 1, Municipality 2, etc.].
- Official geopark documentation, where available.
5.3 Workflow
- Step 1: Review existing boundaries in OSM for accuracy.
- Step 2: Import the merged polygon using JOSM.
- Step 3: Review the new data to check for any conflicts or overlaps.
- Step 4: Resolve conflicts by using OSM boundary relations.
- Step 5: Upload the finalized boundary data in manageable changesets.
5.4 Conflation
Existing administrative boundaries in OSM will be verified to ensure no duplicate or conflicting boundaries. If necessary, manual conflation will be done to adjust the geopark boundary to fit existing OSM data.
6 QA
A QA process will be put in place to ensure the data is accurate and follows OSM standards:
- Step 1: Visual validation using tools like JOSM and OSM Inspector.
- Step 2: Cross-check with existing geopark boundaries in other databases (if available).
- Step 3: Community review by local mappers in Austria and Slovenia to ensure data quality.
