This page describes a key suffix rather than a simple key.

Changes sometimes occur in values of many properties of a linear feature along its path. *:transition=* helps to qualify such changes at the exact place they occur when used on a node part of that linear feature.

As Verifiability is a key principle in OSM, mappers may not be able sometimes to map all sections leading to such transitions, particularly when one side is invisible (buried, inaccessible indoor...).
Then it's interesting to state explicitly a given properties changes even if we are not able to describe the whole feature.
Even in situations where all sides are known, such practices could reinforce our ability to check the consistency of values in different sections of the described feature.

location:transition=* is the original implementation of this suffix. It describes changes of the location=* property along a given path.
