The disused:place=* key is used to name a location which was formerly a populated settlement such as an abandoned village, hamlet, farm or isolated dwelling. Unlike a abandoned:place=*, an disused:place=* still has buildings which could be repaired and returned to use. See disused:=*
How to map
Place a node at the appropriate location and add a disused:place=hamlet, or disused:place=village, disused:place=farm, or disused:place=isolated_dwelling as appropriate, together with name=*. Other possible tags are wikipedia=*, wikidata=*, note=*, source=*, and description=*
It is not recommended to map a disused place as an area, because it is not usually possible to verify the extent of the area of a settlement.
If name is still in standard use add also place=* tag, usually place=locality. Note that completely unused historic names are not mappable in OSM, see OHM for that.
Examples of use
disused:place=* can be used to map the location of a settlement that is no longer inhabited, but still has buildings and infrastructure in reasonably intact condition. This is most frequent in the case of former hamlets disused:place=hamlet, but there may also be disused:place=farm, disused:place=isolated_dwelling and disused:place=village. In the United States, such disused places may be known as "ghost towns".
If the remaining buildings and other features of the place are no longer repairable, see abandoned:place=*.
Many such features are currently tagged place=locality, especially in the United States where many GNIS features were imported as place=locality. However, place=locality is a much less specific tag, used for many other features, including places that were never populated.
