The maximum height in metres. Note that this tag has almost the same definition as the far more popular maxheight=*, minor difference is that sometimes maxheight=* is also applied in cases without a signposted maxheight.
maxheight:legal expresses a legal height limit for using the way to which the tag is added. If no unit is included, the value is assumed to be in metres.
Examples
- maxheight:legal=3.8 - maximum height is 3.8 m
Note
This tag is not very widely diffused, not supported by rendering and likely not by many routing software, and should therefor be used together with maxheight=* to be safe.
A proposal for this tag was rejected. See Proposed features/clearance
Before deleting
Before anybody screams DELETE let me explain. I know this tag is controversial, and after the vote rejection of this tag I created this page, to document my usage of the tag. I put up the suggestion and entered a vote process to let others have a say and maybe improve a tag I was intending to use. OSM have a long time encouraged people to document tags they use, though not necessary linked from Map Features. Some time after I made this page it was deleted by an user, and replaced a redirect to a new proposal.
