ref:ncdot is used to tag ways with the internal reference numbers used by NCDOT for all state-owned secondary highways in North Carolina according to the Location Referencing System. These numbers can be found in NCDOT's State Maintained Roads Opendata, they are often not signed.
The same reference number may exist in various counties. However, in a single county, the number is only used once, but the highway name is subject to changes, caused by subdivision/boundary/municipality.
Note that NCDOT does not assign or maintain local road names, secondary highways are numbered when they do not carry 'NC' or 'US' numbers and are outside the boundary of any incorporated municipality.
