North Island is an island in New Zealand at latitude 38°09′36.00″ South, longitude 175°49′30.00″ East.
Welcome to the wiki project New Zealand North Island page - this page is dedicated to helping OSM mappers working on adding content in New Zealand's North Island.
Please be aware there is currently (2011-02) a data import in progress from Land Information New Zealand and the NZ Open GPS project, of all New Zealand roads and other items. See the LINZ project and LINZ_Trial_Import for details on getting involved, or join the nzopengis group (see NZ page).
This should not stop mappers adding any data - we will merge LINZ data around manually mapped items.
Auckland
Bus stops
There are approximately 9,000 numbered, named bus stops in the Auckland region.
see Tag:highway=bus_stop for more info
To help with public transport routing end enable users to distinguish stops from each other, the ID and preferably the name of the bus stop need to be included:
highway=bus_stop
name=Auckland Zoo
ref=8125
Some stops in Auckland CBD, Newmarket and elsewhere, have an additional letter attached, e.g.: A, B, C, that should go to local_ref=*:
highway=bus_stop
name=Lower Albert Street
ref=1005
local_ref=D
Bus stops also have (mostly unposted but used in stop announcements) Māori names, these should be also mapped when known:
highway=bus_stop
name=Lower Albert Street
name:en=Lower Albert Street
name:mi=Taha Whakararo o te Tiriti o Albert
ref=1005
local_ref=D
Note that if name:mi=* is added, name:en=* should be added as well, even when it's the same as name=*.
Some bus stops also have a longer official name used on AT website and in AT Mobile app, typically those that have the additional letter, that should be in official_name=*:
highway=bus_stop
name=Lower Albert Street
name:en=Lower Albert Street
name:mi=Taha Whakararo o te Tiriti o Albert
official_name=Stop D Lower Albert Street
ref=1005
local_ref=D
See also highway=bus_stop for additional tags that can be added, e.g. shelter=*, bench=* or departures_board=*.
Relations can then be used to collect together all stops for each route, and times added
see:
Bus_route
Relation:route#Bus_Routes_.28also_trolley_bus.29

Māori names
Since 2023, Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council) and Auckland Transport started using Māori names in public transport announcements and on the ground, typically on new footway signs and on reserve welcome signs. Most of the names are semi-official (not gazetted) and simple translations of English terms:

† translation from Waka Kotahi
‡ Waka Kotahi uses Pokapū ā-Tāone
All these should be Te <phrase> o <name>, or in plural (e.g. Shops) Ngā <phrase> o <name> (signs on the ground typically omit Te for brevity, just like they use Dr for Drive, but it should be included in OSM). The name itself is rarely translated, even when that makes no sense, e.g. King Street is Te Tiriti o King, New North Road is Te Huarahi o New North, and Rainbow Bridge is Te Piriti o Rainbow, but there are some exceptions listed below. Sometimes, this simple translation is used even when the feature itself has an official Māori name, and some names are translated differently, e.g. Victoria Park itself is Waiatarau but Victoria Park bus stop is Te Papa Rēhia o Wikitōria.
Corners are pronounced with “mā” in buses but should be written with a slash in OSM:
written: Te Tiriti o Church / Te Tiriti o Wikitōria
pronounced: Te Tiriti o Church mā Te Tiriti o Wikitōria
Names that are translated:
English | Māori |
---|---|
Mount Albert | Ōwairaka |
Mount Eden | Maungawhau |
Mount Roskill | Pukewīwī |
North Shore | ??? |
Saint George | Hāto Hōri |
Saint Jude | Hāto Hura |
Saint Luke | Hāto Ruka |
Victoria | Wikitōria |
Cardinal direction suffixes are translated:
English | Māori |
---|---|
North | kei te Raki |
South | kei te Tonga |
East | kei te Rāwhiti |
West | kei te Hauāuru |
Central | Waengapū? |
For example, Customs Street West is Te Tiriti o Customs kei te Hauāuru. Cardinal directions in the name proper are not translated, e.g. East Street is Te Tiriti o East and Great North Road is Te Huarahi o Great North.
Additionally, prefixes Upper and Lower are translated:
English | Māori |
---|---|
Upper … | Taha Whakarunga o … |
Lower … | Taha Whakararo o … |
For example, Upper Queen Street is Taha Whakarunga o te Tiriti o Queen.
Some additional names:
English | Māori |
---|---|
Northern Busway | Te Arapahi Raki |
Eastern Busway | Te Arapahi Rāwhiti |
Beware that some signs from before late 2023 contain typos (Haurahi* instead of Huarahi) or omit tohutō (Ara Awhio* instead of Ara Āwhio, even partially like Orākei* instead of Ōrākei).
These translations are specific to Auckland and should not be used in other parts of the country. Waka Kotahi has some translations for the whole country (e.g. motorway te ara whānui) but the list is pretty short.
