OSM-for-the-dyslexic
The primary objective of OSM for the dyslexic is to mitigate typical reading errors dyslexic people do when reading and browsing OpenStreetMap.
Despite many applications were developed specifically for dyslexics, none of them is a GIS application. The project website is http://www.osm4dys.org/ https://osm-for-the-dyslexic.github.io
Past Events
OSM for the dyslexic has been presented at 10th GEO European Projects Workshop 2016 (31/5/2016 - 2/6/2016 in Berlin) by the main developer.
How to map for the dyslexic
The concept of styling maps for dyslexics is an innovative point of view for increasing accessibility of the GIS (open) data. None of the free basemaps are accessible-ready for dyslexics:
They are:
- feature-rich,
- color-rich,
- rich of text following complex paths.
Dyslexics feel better when:
- text is capitalized and always horizontal,
- same colors represent same things,
- few information are on the screen.
This GIS application has the capability to:
- describe and tell (audio) where the user is,
- describe and tell the path made by the user around the map,
- describe and tell what the user is currently watching,
- describe and tell the user informations about every single feature on a map.

The OSM for the dyslexic team
The OSM for the dyslexic team is made of two people: a professional freelance teacher and a full stack GIS developer.
Martina Battan
Martina is a frelance professional teacher since 2011 when she founded a cultural association named "lo Studiolo". She has been taking individual lessons since the beginning of her working experience in order to help students with special educational needs. Moreover she has been taking courses to encourage DSA students in their school career and to promote excellences. She obtained a master degree in Contemporary history at Università degli studi di Trento, with final score of 110 and honors (highest possible grade in the Italian system)
Massimiliano Bernabé
Massimiliano is a full stack GIS developer since 2008 when he started his working experience in Sinergis. He partecipated in the development of multiple projects mainly for Regions and multiutilities. In particular he partecipated into the developmet of GetLOD for Emilia Romagna, to create linked open data, to be published to the regional Portal. He obtained a master degree in Bioinformatics at Università degli studi di Trento, with final score of 106/110. He is a co-founder of Associazione Culturale "lo Studiolo".
About the project
This application has been developed within the MyGEOSS project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
What's next?
Next objective is to enlarge the territory covered by the basemap and the service. If you need a particoular city, location or area for your needs feel free to ask the team thorough this website develost.com or social networks.
The team is also interested in co-working and being involved into other GIS projects for the dyslexic.
