OpenStreetMap and the metaverse

This page is about both the idea of using OSM in the metaverse, and a workshop event to discuss this and build a project scope. What is meant with 'metaverse' here is a digital twin earth, like a 3D map, which, in addition to how OpenStreetMap already renders data, needs to include typography as well and be visualised in a 3D way - ideally BOTH in a web browser and in virtual or even augmented reality.

About this event

A workshop and sharing of knowledge of things required to build a metaverse in the context of OpenStreetMap.

An introduction to the different disciplines that could find this metaverse valuable: game designers, geospatial specialists, urban metabolism specialists.

Reason for this event

The world needs an open, user contributed metaverse concept, built on OpenStreetMap. It would be amazing if it is rendered beautifully and efficiently, maybe like Townskaper style. It is important that this metaverse renders typography and is useful to architects and landscape architects. Architects should be able to deploy buildings in it, but their ownership needs to protected, somehow. It should also be able to visualise metabolic flows - rivers, sewer and drinking water infrastructure etc, and more abstract resource flows like emissions and consumptions visualised as overlays, arrows, ribbons and animations.

The data needs to be exported as code or visuals 2D or 3D), to be used in other applications. This enables use of modelling landscapes, for example.

A wide variety of data should be able to be imported, at appropriate resolutions, for example to simulate weather, visualise flooding, urban metabolism flows etc. This needs to be traded off with computing power.

Then the metaverse can be gamified as well to generate revenue, or a forked or linked version can achieve this. It could include avatars, which can range from a simple floating cube that has the professional contact information of the user on it, to the more detailed avatars. Importantly, land needs to be free, at least to beginners The main aim of this concept is to provide value, not speculation. The free land portion can be linked to a user's wallet through a smart contract and/or minting as a NFT. Perhaps 'popular' places can be made for sale from the start - we need game theory input there.

Proposed format and dates

4-hour a day, 3 days long event, online, after the annual SotM conference, likely around August 2022. It is probably good to link up more with FOSS4G, which is in August 2022 in Italy.

Sponsors

Being online the event does not have a large budget. Server space and video support are the main costs. The event organisation is volunteer driven.

However, if sponsors choose to support the event, those funds will be converted to micro-grants to support the event outcomes.

Outcomes of events

  • Microgrants from sponsors
  • Project scope
  • Assemble a diverse project team
  • Determine the principles for interoperability
  • Knowledge and networking

Project Scope

We would need to decide on standards, to ensure interoperability of all sorts.

We would need to agree on things like how many polygons the metaverse would support, with the practicalities that entails, what "platform" it would run on (I don't even know what this refers to yet).

There are surely other projects out there doing similar things, when is it appropriate to team up? We would need to scope what is out there and how suitable collaborations are, and/or what collaboration would depend on.
