About

This year the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team is recruiting an intern for the FOSS Outreach Program in partnership and with generous support from Mapzen. This is part of HOT's larger goal to foster further diversity in its community and organization.

From the Outreach Program for Women website: "FOSS Outreach Program helps people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software get involved. We provide a supportive community for beginning to contribute any time throughout the year and offer focused internship opportunities twice a year with a number of free software organizations. This program is an expansion of the Outreach Program for Women (OPW), which has been engaging women (cis and trans) and genderqueer. As a pilot for the expansion, in addition to women and genderqueer, this round is open to all participants of the Ascend Project regardless of gender."

Create Detailed HOT Activation Documentation
Suggested By
Kate Chapman kate.chapman@hotosm.org
Summary
Currently it is difficult for new OpenStreetMap contributors to get involved in HOT activations. Often guides are requested.
Skills Required
Attention to detail, Good written English, Markdown (though we can teach Markdown)
Possible Mentors
Notes
Currently there is some documentation, though having it in one place and easy to use would be a vast improvement. HOT has much documentation available on LearnOSM, but there isn't a quick start guide for someone that wants to help join a HOT activation in response to a crisis or disaster. Typically a new person would come in through our Tasking Manager. Much of the pieces of the documentation: signing up, using the tasking manager and mapping exist in LearnOSM, but a quick start guide would help make things easier for beginners specifically wanting to participate in remote response.

Possible Mentors
Dražen Odobašić drazen.odobasic@hotosm.org
Notes
There has been a personal initiative for improving the UI (ony one of the things to improve though). See here. Would require contact with the authors.
