If you search on 'High Street' or 'Smith Avenue' or whatever, you get a whle load of hits, but no clue as to which the one you want is, other than a lat & long. So I propose we allow a place tag for highways so that the search can show 'High Street, Fulbourn' should that tag exist. Maybe country tag too.

  • The proposed use of this tag seems rather similar to the Placename_hierachies tag. Having said that I'm not sure that roads would want to have either additional tag added to them, it seems far to much additional data to be adding. Probably a better way would be to look for the nearest place=??????, and to work off that. But then I'm not a coder so its easy for me to say:) Dmgroom 00:52, 12 October 2006 (BST)
I think there is an argument to suggest that we need an authoritive database of streetnames with their associated place (ie city, state & county). These would receive lat/lon locative data as and when the streets are drawn into the OSM map data. However the key question is, can we lay our hands on unrestricted or out-of-copyright street names and their corresponding associated "place"? Blackadder 21:08, 12 October 2006 (BST)
  • OK, I missed is_in. I agree it is very similar. (I don't see why is_in needsmore than the first one, as you can chain back up through the place nodes to find the parent. I withdraw this suggestion. User:David.earl 14 Oct 2006
  • I would suggest maybe having, as well as the place= node tag, a place= area tag, and to construct areas around each place. Same tags, but gives the rough outline for a) renderers, so they have the right area to render the whole place and b) to calculate which ways are in that area. Yes, calculation would be a bit of a pain, but much better than having "place=<name>" on every single way in a town or city, for instance. That really would get tedious (and a waste of DB space). • I use the is_in tag in the hope this will be read by the slippy map search facility. Would this not suffice? MikeCollinson 20:40, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
