This proposal has been obsoleted by the approved "Bridge" proposal.
Description
Viaducts are currently properties of the rail and highway tags, which is confusing. It also means you can't define the kind of highway or railway that the viaduct carries, which is pretty useless!
I'm proposing to bring viaducts in line with bridges, embankments, cuttings and other properties of ways. It may be appropriate to think of a non-boolean way of doing this in the future, but this proposal will at least make sense of viaducts in the mean time.

Tags
Applies to any way that might go along a viaduct:
<tag k="viaduct" v="yes"/>
Deprecates
This tag would deprecate the following tags:
<tag k="highway" v="viaduct"/> <tag k="rail" v="viaduct"/>
Example
The viaduct at Peckham Rye station is currently tagged as a bridge, which is wrong. Viaducts are extremely common in dense urban areas, and in some rural areas.

Comments
A viaduct can sometimes carry different ways at the same time, like an railway and an motorway, either in breadth or in layers. It should be possible to tag those different ways as on the same viaduct. How can this be done, maybe with relations? Zoidberg 07:05, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

I am in favor. This scheme fits logically with tunnel or bridge. A viduct is the same type of thing. It can carry different things like railways, subways, motorways, even canals. Therefore, this would obsolete the tag aqueduct. Zoidberg 07:05, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
