No-passing turn lane
In the US, we have lanes that you may use for making or for completing a left turn but that you may not use for passing. Is there a way to tag this? If you were only allowed to use the lane to set up for a left turn, you could mark the lane as change=no, and if you were only allowed to use it to complete a turn, you could mark the next lane over as change=not_left. But if you have to allow both, then you're allowed to cross the lane line in either direction, just not for passing. Germyb (talk) 22:21, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
- Are you talking about a center turn lane? There is already a proposal here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Suffix_both_ways This uses turn:both_ways=left since the center lane is tagged lanes:both_ways=1. I don't think it is wrong to change lanes to the right if you are in the center lane, but maybe it should be tagged overtaking:both_ways=no ?--Rassilon (talk) 14:03, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
Discouraged lane changes
In countries that follow the MUTCD, including the United States, a single solid white line means a lane change is "discouraged" (such as around turn lanes), while double solid white lines means a lane change is prohibited (such as in tunnels). [1] I've been tagging both cases as change=no, change:lanes=no, etc., since the distinction is probably insignificant for most routing and display purposes.
I can think of one exception, which is a driveway joining a roadway where a lane-change restriction has already begun for a turn lane. in that case, perhaps a transit=* relation can clarify that a lane change is still possible from the driveway to the roadway's through lanes.

- For Missouri, USA: Double white line means "prohibited", illegal to change lanes. Single white line means "discouraged", it is legal to change lanes, but you should be very careful when doing so. If it were illegal, they would both be prohibited. I would only put the restriction on double white lines. Fearsyth (talk) 17:50, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
