- whats missing for me is a first aid/emergency station (for example at a beach or a repeating large scale event)
- It feels odd to describe that as a 'clinic', but something allowing one to say what kinds of services are available on its own would be a good idea. And first aid is an important service to note. Added below, under the merge stuff for now; perhaps we could clarify that medical=* (or whatever) shouldn't necessarily imply amenity=clinic, and suggest it for use with hospitals, pharmacies, kiosks etc. --achadwick 22:15, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Dispensing vs. non-dispensing

- It's a pharmacy that isn't appropriately licensed to provide medicines that are only available on a Doctor's prescription, but can provide "off-the-shelf" or "over-the-counter" medicines. For instance, a dispensing pharmacist is allowed to provide Methodone (a Heroin substitute used for the treatment of drug addiction) and Aspirin, a non-dispensing pharmacist may dispense Aspirin, but not Methodone. Merge with Proposed_features/GP_Surgery?
I've suggested merging Proposed_features/GP_Surgery into this proposal because a) that proposal seems to have run out of steam, and b) because it would be good to say what services a clinic provides. I'd be happy to go with a combined scheme that allows something like:
- amenity=clinic
- medical=<servicelist>
- emergency=yes|no
where <servicelist> would be a semicolon-separated list of values from {dentist, doctor, first_aid, chiropodist, physiotherapy, minor_surgery, ...}. This should probably be deliberately left user-definable because there are an awful lot of services out there. Icons for the more common ones, a generic clinic icon for unspecified values or ones not recognised, perhaps? --achadwick 22:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

This feature is very essential in the place where I am mapping . One because there are many such clinics and I have to mark them as hospitals and on lower zoom levels all I could see on the roads are hospitals! --Pavi 15:22, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Shall we move this along then? Let's get tidying!
The database has 400+ instances of this tag, and there's lots of support for it. Let's tidy it up and document it as a de facto usage, then extract something useful to Tag:amenity=clinic. I've started with a tentative ValueDescription block here, can someone find or take a photo please?
This is a simple tagging scheme, and that has enormous benefits. Like most mappers, I am not a qualified medical expert in the field. Therefore I pretty much distinguish between small ones, middle-sized ones, and big ones - and that's it. I couldn't care much about the hair-splitting going on at Proposed_features/Healthcare_2.0. How do others feel about dividing up the sizes:
- amenity=doctors, amenity=dentist etc. - small medical practices with up tens or twenty staff. Small surgeries like this can be more specialized than either of the following, and that is why separate tags are used.
- amenity=clinic - medium-sized medical practices with tens of staff, but probably fewer than a couple of hundred.
- amenity=hospital - large or very large medical centres with hundreds of staff and large sites.
Do we need to say anything more? Stricter numbers or looser (my mental model is just rough orders of magnitude)?
