Proposal talk:Deposit rings

Tag name

Generally nothing against the chosen key name (it's anyways just a placeholder). But might be worth asking English native speakers if they already have a common name for it. Another thing to consider is that as "deposit rings" will became more popular in the future some other designs might not be in a form of a ring, but might be already built into the bin itself etc. --Mashin (talk) 12:54, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

I am also unsure if in English, it is clear that "deposit" here means containers that are affected by container-deposit legislation. I think something like beverage_container_ring would be better. I have no problems tagging the feature, but the name needs a second thought. First, there are other forms to hold the bottles/cans than a ring around the bin. I have seen several types of racks and holders here in Berlin, some already integrated in the bin and not retrofitted. Second, 'deposit' might be hard to understand for someone not from Germany, which has a very stringent deposit system. --Polarbear w (talk) 20:51, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

I see waste=* should be extended to waste:*=* to follow recycling:*=*, fitting this purpose. Then you can use waste:bottles=* etc directly. From *=yes, you can invent eg *=inside, *=outside, *=ring, *=rack etc. --- Kovposch (talk) 04:35, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

But this is not about the kinds of waste collected at the waste-basket, but about equipment to collect returnable beverage containers that can then be picked up by people collecting these to bring them back to the stores and get the deposit. Discostu36 (talk) 12:47, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

That's an even better question. Should this only be amenity=waste_basket? Is it an amenity=recycling added? Or actually where is bottle deposit tagging in shops in the first place? What about using existing tags? e.g.:

amenity=waste_basket
waste=trash
recycling_type=container (or something else?)
recycling:glass_bottles=yes 
recycling:plastic_bottles=yes
recycling:cans=yes

This is not about recycling. This is about a feature where you can place returnable beverage containers so that another person can collect and return them to receive the refund. Discostu36 (talk) 07:28, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Indeed what makes it complicated is the complicated system in Germany. Certain glass and plastic bottles are returned for being re-used (multi-way), other bottles and aluminium cans are returned for being recycled (one-way), the deposit for the one-way is higher than for the multi-way containers. --Polarbear w (talk) 09:11, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

but what is a deposit ring?

This proposal talks about deposit rings and that they were added to help people who would otherwise rifle through the bin but doesn't actually describe what they look like or how they function. The definition of a deposit ring is assumed knowledge. What do they actually do? What form do they take? The picture included shows a bin that looks like it has cupholders on the outside, is that the deposit ring? Is that the only form acceptable under the tag or could there be other recepticals? Is the intent to restrict this proposal to a single regional use or are other slightly different forms from other jurisdictions acceptable? If so then it needs to actually define them and say how they are meant to function.--InsertUser (talk) 13:24, 11 November 2022 (UTC)

I guess it is not the intention of the author to restrict usage of the proposed tagging. It is just the typical effect that someone has an idea based on local experience, and it needs discussion to widen the scope to make it useful internationally. --Polarbear w (talk) 13:30, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
