Proposal talk:GP Surgery
Confusion over status, and use.
I find the consistent schema confusing, and would prefer the stethescope for GP surgeries. Has this proposal been superceeded by that one ?
Perhaps it is a measure of scale.
Remote areas...
Raised in relation to amentity=doctor for surgeries..
What about places like the North of Scotland where the local doctor isn't just the surgery but is also the de-facto emergency medical contact?
Would it not be better to have amenity=doctor amenity=medical and use a secondary tag to indicate if it provides emergency cover?

- Whatever we do to represent a surgery, clinic or other non-hospital medical place, let's recommend the emergency={yes|no} tag proposed and accepted for hospitals for what you want here. Can doctors dispense drugs in some parts of the world? Maybe that should be suggested too. There's nothing to prevent anyone from using them right now, of course. --achadwick 21:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Reboot / restart?
This proposal has been static since October 22, 2007, and no tags have been proposed for it yet. If no-one has any objections, I'd like to restart the process by formally proposing some tags and an icon.
- I suppose - even though I'm going to get caned over this...! - amenity=doctor and amenity=dentist, would be OK, by analogy with the current hospital and pharmacy scheme. Allow emergency={yes|no} permitted for when a doctor might be the only on-call medical support in an area.
- Alternatively we could merge this proposal with Proposed_features/Clinic_(Medical) and either:
- Use additional tags (in medical=* or health=*) to represent what sort of medical services are available. That would be extensible, so we could add in extra services like minor surgery at a later date without jamming up amenity=* too much.
- Just merge and add a number of amenity={doctor|dentist|optician} tags to the clinics proposal.

Current tag usage
This helps us plan. These figures come from http://etricceline.de/osm/united-kingdom/tags.htm on 2008-06-06; UK only because Tagwatch doesn't cover the whole of the globe. Sorry.
- 110 amenity=doctors
- 31 amenity=doctor
- 3 medical=dentist
- 1 medical=optician
- 1 health=dentist
There are no references to "GP" "general practitioner" or "surgery". --achadwick 21:07, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Icon thoughts
If we want to step away from plus-signs-in-geometric-shapes for this kind of feature:
- GPs and family doctors could probably be represented with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_of_Asclepius . The stethoscope is good too, but I think the one suggested needs some tidying up first.
- For dentists: profile of a tooth?
- For opticians: a pair of spectacles.
- For others: hhm. Well, perhaps that's just an undefined Proposed_features/Clinic_(Medical). Perhaps a clinic should just be a polyclinic or a placeholder for something we haven't an icon for yet.
I'd suggest using a consistent colour scheme, preferably the same shade of green. --achadwick 21:33, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Wrap up: dead since June 2008
This proposal is dusty and abandoned. Time to archive it.
But people like what this proposal stands for, looking at the opinion-only (?) votes cast. Its successor is Proposed features/Doctor, which is currently up for discussion. --achadwick 21:21, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
