Use "quad" instead

Quad seems also to be known in English, it's the default name in French, German and Dutch. In Spanish it's Cuatrimoto (which resembles "quad", and "quad is also used by some), and in Portugese, it's Quadricyclo (all according to Wikipedia).

So quad, while also used in English, seems to be more internationally understandable name.

I agree with Sanderd. The restriction to a width of 50 inches seems to be something specific for the US. Belgium has recently issued a roadsign (C6[1]) to ban quads from certain roads. According to Belgian traffic law (KB 2011/06/20, art 11[2]), a quad is a 4WD of max. 400kg without a body and with a steering wheel like a motor cycle. Size is not a criterium. And I also prefer to use the term 'Quad'. Most mappers will immediately understand what "motor_vehicle=quad" means. Gilbert54 (talk) 14:45, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Some are three wheelers. Others are 6-wheelers. Are those called quads in these countries? Are they ever legislated differently? Where in doubt, the "official" English Wikipedia page for a concept or thing may be a good decider. I don't like acronyms personally; perhaps all_terrain_vehicle is better? (all lower-case, with underscores substituting for hyphens, spaces etc.)

But can the concept(s) be generalized? Something like small_offroad, large_offroad etc.?

Andrew Finn--- ATV or All Terrain Vehicle is the most common in Canada. Number of wheels as previously mentioned varies. Also the size, weight, width etc varies. Major cities do not allow ATV's while smaller towns may allow some or all streets. This should be a simple check box like cycling or horses etc and leave the definition blank as that will vary from country to country or in between various states or provinces. I'd like to press the routing button on the map for directions the same way we do for Walking, Driving or Cycling and have the map show ATV allowed roads and trails.

Do not require access=designated. Support all access values

• access=designated
• atv=designated|yes|no

with

Use as you would any other access key, e.g. atv=<access-value>

Rationale: access=designated is meaningless on its own: it does not state what or who the route is supposed to be for. Additionally, more than three values should be supported: some areas may have private ATV use, for example.
