Proposal talk:Narrow lanes
Personally I would use highway=unclassified lanes=1 for this. Bruce89 19:54, 27 May 2007 (BST)
- Doesn't this imply 1 lane each way, though? Which means it does not accurately describe the situation. DancingFool 04:01, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I think highway=service is adequate for this. wikipedia's service road ("Frontage road") is not at all the same thing as what OSM's highway=service is. --Hawke 21:33, 11 June 2007 (BST)
I agree with Bruce89 but then it should be rendered as a service way. Osm@floris.nu 13:39, 24 June 2007 (BST)
This is redundant to highway=service. It is intended for laneways and minor access roads; if you want to distinguish between private and public roads, use access=private. Andrewpmk 03:53, 21 September 2007 (BST)
I agree with Bruce89. The service road tag is for access roads. Some of these narrow lanes are through routes, or even short sections of otherwise wider roads. To tag them as "service" is illogical and tag usage should not be dictated by rendering, in my opinion. Daveemtb 16:37, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I really do not see how Bruce89's suggestion would lead to coherent use of the lanes tag. Longwayround 18:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think the lanes tag should be used for this, and the renderer should take it onto account .... --PhilippeP 19:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
- The lanes tag as it stands cannot be used for this. It specifies that the number listed is lanes in each direction. Are you going to say lanes = 0.5? I agree that the lanes tag is the obvious one for this, but we must decide on a sensible way to specify one lane only, not one each way, and then make sure it is properly documented, as many people obviously misread it now. It specifies that the number listed is lanes in each direction.: wrong it's the number of lanes per way ... so if lanes=0.5 then obviously it's a highway=cycleway, highway=footway, ... a car could not fit unless you're a stuntman and can ride on 2 wheels ... see lanes=number_of_lanes
