Add details to opening_hours?

I do not object to your idea in principle but the opening_hours tag is so complex already that adding yet another special case to it seems excessive. Sure, it would be nice to cover any and all types of opening and closing times, but I don't think it is a realistic goal for OSM mappers. AlaskaDave (talk) 00:19, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

These proposals just show that there will never be a complete opening hours syntax. I think that this is not a problem, as opening hours don't belong in OSM in the first place, just as the names of the employees and the colours of their hairs don't belong in. If you don't tag them at all, you don't need to care about the syntax and its myriads of exceptions. --Fkv (talk) 15:54, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

School Holidays

The issue with school holidays is that they vary by local authority area, hence a data user has to then work out where the business is, and then find out when the holidays are. Its not something that people magically know.--trig222 (talk) 12:47, 16 March 2014

I'd believe it's more likely, that somebody can come up with an api that can answer what the local holiday descriptions mean around the world - every year, crowdsourced if not directly - than, that the mapper knows exactly when the, say, school holidays are in the area they happen to mapping at that time (it's not necessarily near their home), and is there to refresh the values each year. For example a value with "2014 Jun 2-2014 Aug 8 off" is outdated on 2014-08-09, but "SH off" can be decoded the next year. It might well be that neither the mapper, nor the consumer magically know what it refers to, but those that do know, do know. Alv (talk) 15:41, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

I agree and already started such a definition here (nice addition, no mapper has to write a new definition for each year (at least for school holidays in Germany) because they are imported from the ical files provide by [1]. This can also be implemented or other countries.) This does already work for the evaluation tool and the opening_hours_map.--Ypid (talk) 17:34, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

User's consistency?

I object to such way of tagging opening_hours. It can already be hard for mappers to get opening_hours right besides the basic cases. Adding such feature would introduce a problem of consistency of spellings and so. Besides I find it rare to know exactly when a business is open. "PH" and specifying a range of days should be enough. --Jgpacker (talk) 21:55, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Problems with this proposal

The current examples are too ambiguous:

• "Christmas" is too vague, I would intuitively assume that it includes the 26th, and Orthodox Christians would place the entire event in January.
• "Inauguration day" should specify that it's about the US. The US president isn't the only person in the world to be inaugurated.

I assume this problem would affect lots of newly created values where people only look at their own experience and assume it's globally unambiguous, which makes me doubt whether this will work well. It would make sense to at least limit this to holidays that are on different days each year - no reason why you couldn't just write Dec 25, is there? And as a final nitpick, I also think that these should follow the usual syntax conventions for value constants, e.g. inauguration_day. --Tordanik 17:05, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
