Discussion from the first proposal
- Not sure who the original proposer is. There was no page for this so I've created it and changed the tag from amenity=potablewater to amenity=potable_water. Hope you don't mind! MikeCollinson 08:53, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- I assume this is supposed to be portable water, not potable. Bruce89 15:07, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- Um, no. see dictionary Morwen 15:13, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- Bloody silly word, oh well. Bruce89 15:24, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- Um, no. see dictionary Morwen 15:13, 11 June 2007 (BST)
- I'm the OP; still learning to maximize the benefits of the wiki :-). The intent is to indicate access to drinkable water in public parks. For instance, Big Bend National Park is over 900,000 acres and knowing where potable (would you prefer "drinking"?) water is can be life-critical. RobertWyatt 15:45, 11 June 2007 (CST)
- "potable" is fine with me, though I've no objections to "drinking" instead. --Hawke 22:43, 11 June 2007 (BST) ditto Hawke's comments. MikeCollinson 10:08, 16 June 2007 (BST)
- It this a duplicate of waterway=water_point, that is already a feature, or is it something different? Ulfl 18:04, 7 July 2007 (BST)
- Dito. water_point exsists already, and although the tag doesn't make it clear in itself, in the discription it states that its to be used to tag fresh water points. Ben 01:44, 12 July 2007 (BST)
- Well, I've added the description after consulting the list, though I'm not 100% sure that the comment is in fact correct - Ulfl 02:11, 12 July 2007 (BST)

- Would this also be useable on camp sites for stand pipes? - LastGrape
- Yes! It should be as general as possible. MikeCollinson 21:02, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- I would strongly prefer to use amenity=drinking_water instead - IMO this makes it more clear for none native english speakers. I also suggest to remove/replace the existing tag waterway=water_point with this one - Ulfl 02:11, 12 July 2007 (BST)
- According to the water_point description, it's a place to fill a caravan. This is useful info to know, since going to fill your RV from a small drinking fountain is not going to work. But I'd also like to see a different tag for "drinking_water" (or potable) to represent drinking fountains. Beej71 09:02, 23 September 2007 (BST)
- At the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) National Science and Technology Center (NSTC) I found a set of pictograms which had been set to be public domain. Check out pictogram #37 which shows "drinking water". The cup below the water tap makes it more clear that this water is potable.
- Another set of copy-free symbols can be found on American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). On the symbols signs page for man_made drinking drinking fountains you will find an own symbol. The tag discussed on this page should only cover natural water sources.
- In opposite to potable water on US National Park Services map symbols & patterns you will find a pictogram for radiator water on map symbols explanation PDF. Vanagaudi 00:51, 04 November 2007 (BST)
- RobertWyatt, would you mind changing the proposal to amenity=drinking_water? A number of people have commented on it and does seem easier to understand for non-native english speakers. Then we could go straight to a vote. MikeCollinson 21:01, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with MikeCollinson , amenity=drinking_water would be a lot clearer for non-native english speakers. Marijn 10:27, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Assuming this is changed to drinking_water, IMO this more general tag should replace waterway=water_point. Gerv 16:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
